Simone Weil hit on something similar: "Imaginary evil is romantic and varied; real evil is gloomy, monotonous, barren, boring. Imaginary good is boring; real good is always new, marvelous, intoxicating."

Instead, just a bunch of white men - who are a vast supermajority of all elected officials, every President ever save one - almost all complaining that there "isn't a candidate for them." How is any of this news? What did we learn? Extremely weak tea.

Long, soft-focus piece on @npr.org Morning Edition about the Democratic Party's "struggles with men" in a series of conversations with (white) Maine men. Not once was it mentioned that men have *always* leaned conservative - not once was there a sense of how today is more or less than that.

I'm working on an article about teachers who bring guests into the classroom to serve as visiting experts, judges, audiences, and more. I'd love to chat with any public or private school educators who make this practice part of their pedagogy. Please feel free to message me here.

"fouled by allegations"???!!?! JFC, NPR. He admitted in court he sexually abused teenage wrestlers as young as 14, after which the judged called him “a serial child molester.”

This is your occasional reminder that generative "AI" in particular could have been developed on public domain materials and/or licensed and compensated works but the major players intentionally, methodically and systemically chose to steal labor from working creative folks instead

Its not quite time to really tell people what’s happening, plainly, because they’re still caught in the midterms fever but someone credible has to emerge soon to do it or it’s a wrap.

Very funny that the Dodgers got a Bad Edwin Diaz season this year and now he might just be nails again.*If* that's the case it's just very hard to see any team scoring enough runs over a series to beat them.

I do think this should put some of the hand-wringing over the uniquely sinful American electorate, uniquely feckless institutions, etc in perspective. The truth is that there is a large trans-national constituency of people who actively want this. They aren’t deceived. They want this.

I'll never understand how "a lot of mostly/potentially/probably incorrect metadata is better for digital discovery than accurate but sparse metadata" became a popular idea than "we will put things online more slowly, but we will do it with accuracy"

There's a zeroeth thing here, as well - which is that newspapers (and publishers more generally) *failed to maintain their ad business* during the transition to digital. They knew it was coming; they chose short term profits instead of winning the future. Much more on this in my book, soon!

I 100% agree with this. The risks from AI aren’t anything to do with existential threats from superintelligence. The risks are negligence, lack of care for the people and ecosystems impacted by this work, and invasions of privacy at scale.

I’ve been a media witness to two federal executions. One was Oklahoma City bomber Timothy McVeigh. The other, a week later, was a drug kingpin named Juan Raul Garza. My conclusion after watching both men die: The death penalty should not exist. Period. It fixes nothing, and it erodes our souls.

there are moral arguments against the death penalty in its ideal form but in real life you never need to get there. the prior question is "can the state be trusted to end the life only of the rightly convicted without torture?" and the answer is no

yeah I just don't know. The bigger answer of why that all hasn't worked is that the alumni networks support the chapters, and the alumni are men in Congress and Fortune 500 executive positions. If it were to become shameful for them to keep supporting frats, that'd be big.
