I could build an entire STS course segment out of this exchange alone but this is one of the problems with how "AI" has been conceptualized and under-theeorized in public discourse. "AI" is in the main a marketing slogan that bundles together a wide range of tools and applications.

Remember the Day

In Nostalgic Vein-The Tent-The College Man-The Talent-Chautauqua Week

Chautauqua had been promised for weeks, with window cards showing pictures of the Italian band, the buxom and ample-coiffed female lecturer, the prestidigitators, and David Roth, the man who remembered everything.

As @ryanfm.bsky.social and @marthaharbison.northsky.social note I did indeed see a Pileated Woodpecker in Fort Greene Park and it was absurdly silly - I was on the phone with my parents, scanning the treeline with bins and it FLEW INTO FRAME. Here's one of the bad cellphone photos Ryan mentioned.

Duchamp out here creating generative algorithms.
The score of Duchamp's "unrealizable" piece According to its inscription, Duchamp created this unrealizable musical piece for "a designated musical instrument (player piano, mechanical organs, or other new instruments for which the virtuoso intermediary is suppressed)." His plan for creating the score eliminated conscious intention or composition: Eighty-five numbered balls, representing the notes on ordinary pianos at the time, fall through a funnel and into little wagons moving at different speeds. The sequence in which they fall determines the order of notes in the score, which together form a "kind of new new musical alphabet."

yup! Most of the things I learned about 1970s and '80s politics and culture came from old Doonesbury and Bloom County collections. Did I understand them all at the time? Nope! But the penny dropped later. For instance: the Donald Trump arc in this Doonsbury collection!

But it's not just that. The Ellisons' acquisition of Warner Brothers Discovery is heavily leveraged on investments from Gulf sovereign wealth funds - they're asking for a waiver of the 25% max to go to 49.5% foreign money *or as much as 100%* (3/n)
Paramount also requested FCC approval of up to 100% of “indirect aggregate foreign equity…to accommodate routine fluctuations in publicly held equity interests and to account for potential future investments.”

These are not serious people.
You remember in 2020, the Gucci, Chanel stuff in SoHo, when that was looted. That looms so much larger in many Bloomberg liberals’ imaginations as profoundly more violent in some ways than the original action being protested, right? And I find that really interesting.

This is a very weird thing to post because it never happened! Bernie Sanders wasn't in the Senate until 2007, and the AUMF passed 296-133 (including Sanders) in the House, and 77-23 in the Senate. He was part of a minority who voted against it yes but there were over 150 of them!

Also good for preventing nuclear war!
Fisher was known for a unique idea towards nuclear deterrence. In a March 1981 article in the Bulletin of the Atomic Scientists, while discussing the importance on reaching a "wise decision", especially in terms of nuclear arms, he suggested implanting the nuclear launch codes in a volunteer. If the President of the United States wanted to activate nuclear weapons, he would be required to kill the volunteer to retrieve the codes.

My suggestion was quite simple: Put that needed code number in a little capsule, and then implant that capsule right next to the heart of a volunteer. The volunteer would carry with him a big, heavy butcher knife as he accompanied the President. If ever the President wanted to fire nuclear weapons, the only way he could do so would be for him first, with his own hands, to kill one human being. The President says, "George, I'm sorry but tens of millions must die." He has to look at someone and realize what death is—what an innocent death is. Blood on the White House carpet. It's reality brought home.

When I suggested this to friends in the Pentagon they said, "My God, that's terrible. Having to kill someone would distort the President's judgment. He might never push the button."

I mean there is a reason that we are still out here reading those books! I keep coming back to Lincoln's Second Inaugural. We are still there.
Both read the same Bible and pray to the same God and each invokes His aid against the other. It may seem strange that any men should dare to ask a just God's assistance in wringing their bread from the sweat of other men's faces but let us judge not that we be not judged. The prayers of both could not be answered ~ that of neither has been answered fully. The Almighty has His own purposes. "Woe unto the world because of offenses for it must needs be that offenses come but woe to that man by whom the offense cometh." If we shall suppose that American slavery is one of those offenses which in the providence of God must needs come but which having continued through His appointed time He now wills to remove and that He gives to both North and South this terrible war as the woe due to those by whom the offense came shall we discern therein any departure from those divine attributes which the believers in a living God always ascribe to Him. Fondly do we hope ~ fervently do we pray ~ that this mighty scourge of war may speedily pass away. Yet, if God wills that it continue until all the wealth piled by the bondsman's two hundred and fifty years of unrequited toil shall be sunk and until every drop of blood drawn with the lash shall be paid by another drawn with the sword as was said three thousand years ago so still it must be said 'the judgments of the Lord are true and righteous altogether.'
