eyyy it’s the thing I was ranting about yesterday! I wish their polls went back through 2000 because this doesn’t track how aggressively anti-socialist the early 2000s were

a fish in the shadow of the oregon maritime museum shipa zoom-in on the fish. it looks like some kind of big carp and is black with light colored splotches. I’ve never seen a fish on this part of the willamette and kind of thought they couldn’t survive in this part of the river

I’m sure this is a sick fucking burn but I can’t parse it, I do appreciate that the cartoonist gives their name as “justin case”

uhhhhh
investigation was originally developed for The New York Times, where it underwent eight months of editing, multiple rounds of fact-checking, and independent replication of the underlying methodology. The piece had a scheduled publication date when requests for comment were sent. It was only after the Times reached out to the subjects of the investigation for routine comment that the Elias Law Group, representing the DCCC and DSCC, sent a cease-and-desist letter demanding the paper not publish. Although the paper's fact-checkers and legal department later cleared the piece before sending out a second round of requests for comment, the Times ultimately decided to kill the piece.3:27
a4democracy.substack.com
The piece was subsequently slated for publication at The Bulwark, where it underwent additional fact-checking, data verification, and legal review. When requests for comment were sent to the subjects of the investigation, lawyers representing the Progressive Turnout Project and Mothership Strategies likewise responded with legal letters demanding that the article not run.
From there, publication was repeatedly delayed. The piece cleared successive rounds of legal review. When I asked for a committed publication date after months of delay, The Bulwark conditioned publication on my accepting an extensive rewrite prepared by its editors that, in my assessment, removed key empirical findings without explanation, introduced claims contradicted by the data and fact-checking record, and presented the subjects' legal defenses as my own conclusions. When I declined to publish under those terms, the piece was released back to me.

Can't believe I've let much of the summer pass by without reminding everyone about these maps that I once made of something very important: the distribution of blue moon–flavor ice cream. More info and maps here: somethingaboutmaps.wordpress.com/2020/11/02/t... #icecream #midwest #map #datavis

Feel free to check if your city or town was a Sundown town. Notice that most Sundown towns were not in the South. And if you want to go to your local library or city hall to update some information, or pull some records, please heed the warnings by the researchers that put this map together...

I am rereading the earthsea trilogy and having a lot of thoughts about it. when I was young and twisted in on myself, I read the shadow as a representation of depression. as an adult, I see it as an embodiment of how one’s power and ego and drive will scale to the amount of evil that one can do
