The way I know I’m more of a movie guy than a TV guy is I’ve seen about 75% fewer shows on the NYT tv list than I did movies on that list last year and I have no real strong opinions on any.

With The Straight Story (1999), I’ve finally watched all of David Lynch’s feature films. And…they’re very good! Even the ones I couldn’t say I liked (Inland Empire, Dune), still linger in my mind, despite slipping away every time I try to grasp them. I don’t get Letterboxd’s love for FWWM tho.

I appreciate that Emily Wilson is shooting straight on her thoughts on the Odyssey even though (as she says) it’s bringing huge attention to (especially her translation of) the book. But I do think it’s funny to just go, “yeah, the screenwriting’s bad” as part of that criticism.

My hot take is that this is probably a similar effect to what you would have seen on a take home exam pre-AI but post-Internet. In 2020, my class had a midterm with a section taken during online class and a take home section—there were students with a huge delta between those two.
