Fun story about one of the first dogfights between the Zero and Hellcat. The attack on 10/5/1943 was the biggest carrier raid of the war so far, 3 fleet carriers and 3 light carriers. Flight ops were a mess so planes began heading to the island captured by the Japanese in December 1941 on their own🧵

In a new article at @WarFrontsWeekly I have something to say about the recent revelations on the Ukraine's African adventure and the Malian one in particular. I personally don't like it as you know - and say why. My opinion below. fronts.co/article/ukra...

Ukraine's Intervention in the Sahel is Hurting Russia. It's also Destabilising the Region.
A handful of Ukrainian trainers embedded with Mali's Tuareg rebels are fighting Russia's Africa Corps — but their allies include al-Qaeda's JNIM, and Kyiv's.

Today, the true war in Ethiopia has begun. And it's only one of many that are about to restart. Most of them will also be converged, with players fighting their civil war interfering in another. Nobody sane to stop this. This is what most of the world cheered for. Good luck.

Battlegroup Clash: Baltics (2nd printing) | Sapper Studio
Battlegroup Clash: Baltics (BC:B) is a two- to six-player platoon-level tactical combat game. It simulates a series of hypothetical near future battles in the Baltics between NATO and Russian forces.   The game emphasises the importance of planning and modern day combined armed techniques. Drones and tactical electronic warfare are key features of the game.    BC:B can be used to support learning and development as a PME tool. It will also appeal to commercial gamers interested in learning more about the modern battlefield and how a NATO Battlegroup would respond and perform against equivalent sized Russian forces in the river and forest-rich terrain of the Baltics. This 2nd printing updates the rulebook and scenario book to incorporate the minor errata from the first printing, but is otherwise identical to the first printing.

From a report into the incident 👇
At 10:26 pm, Lieutenant R. C. Anderson attempted to take off his overloaded PB4Y-1,
Buno 38766, ex USAAF B-24 serial number 44-40348, assigned to VB-116. The PB4Y-1 was carrying nine 500-Id bombs and its gross weight was 66,000 Ibs. The emergency maximum gross weight of the PB4Y-1 aircraft was listed at 64,000 Ibs. During the war the combat loads regularly exceeded 65,000 Ibs often at 67,000 plus. With the extra weight the controls were mushy and soft. Operating PB4Y-1 aircraft in excess of their recommended gross weight had become routine and a normal requirement in the area to accomplishment its combined mission of reconnaissance and strike. As the aircraft just lifted off, the Pilot cut throttles and aborted his take-off due to darkness, load and rolling runway. The pilot thought he was still on the runway mat, but was actually airborne. With a thirty degree cross-wind the plane drifted left and crashed into the parked carrier planes immediately adjacent to the runway. As the plane collided with the first row of parked airplanes, it carried away wing tips off the folded wings, canopies and came to rest in the parking area fifty-yards past the end of runway and twenty yards to the left. The PB4Y-1 plane burned with the fire spreading to other parked aircraft. The fire then caused the low order detonation of all nine 500-lb bombs and was instrumental in extending sphere of devastation to include the loss or damage of 106 aircraft. Eighty four planes out of the 106 were destroyed or so damaged as to be unfit for further use. The type of planes destroyed included F6F-3, 16 aircraft; FM-1, 11 aircraft; SB2C-1, 12 aircraft; SB2C-3, 3 aircraft; and TBM-1, 42 aircraft. Another 22 aircraft were damaged, but repairable. Nine members of the crew were killed, but miraculously, two crewmen survived.
(This page also includes the names of those killed and recommended measures to prevent reoccurrence)

Frank Norton, HMAS Sydney engaging RN Bartolomeo Colleoni, painted 1942. Cape Spada on the right. Colleoni can be seen to the right of Sydney, emitting smoke and having lost her bows but still firing. A destroyer to the left engages Colleoni with gunfire.

Despite the title of the painting, this is likely to show the final phase of the battle, with HMAS Sydney pursuing the fleeing cruiser Giovanni delle Bande Nere while the destroyers finished off Bartolomeo Colleoni and rescued her survivors.
