Reminded today yet again that despite my deep concern and outrage at the Netanyahu government’s actions in Gaza the supposed pro-Palestinian movement is too toxic for me to associate with.

I think back sometimes to 2015-6, when even many prominent Republicans called Trump out. We all knew he did not possess a single shred of civic virtue or fidelity to the law. We all should be ashamed to our dying days to have allowed this man dominate our public life for over a decade.

interesting that conservatives were militantly “we must reward hustle” when the target was affirmative action at elite universities and now, when faced with the success of south asians and other groups, it is “i think we are too meritocratic”

To be blunt, Democratic politicians are more likely to be from faith traditions that American Protestants even today actively dislike and look down on. Ask me how I know.

Vance doesn't count because even though he's a Catholic he still talks like a Protestant.

Even in the Year of Our Lord 2026 the Protestants still think they have a monopoly on "faith" in American public life. The punditocracy also doesn't want to admit that Catholics, Hindus, Jews, and Muslims talking about their faith in public is usually not warmly received by Protestants.

Joe Biden talked about his Catholic faith all the time. The dude wore a rosary on his wrist and went to mass every week. Now I am seeing this weird narrative that Democrats somehow rejected talk of faith and need to do it more. What they really mean is that they should be vocally Protestant.

A figure like Trump is always gonna be a huge influence on how people of his era write villains, even subconsciously, so it sucks for art that he's just perfectly smooth psychologically.

Luckily the Democrats have multiple young, charismatic politicos able to talk in the populist key: AOC, Mamdani, Al-Sayed, etc. They also have less overtly left young politicians like Ossof who know how to speak to popular discontent. Let them lead the way.

I am a fan of 80s action B movies and one of them is Enter the Ninja, where the martial arts master character declares "Only a ninja can defeat a ninja!" This is now my theory of politics. Right wing populism in the US can only be defeated by left wing populism. America is not Canada.

Grand Island is the sister city of my hometown of Hastings, Nebraska. It just feels strange for Trump to be in a place like that. My beloved cousin who lives there is battling cancer and said she thought it was appropriate that she was getting prepped for a colonoscopy today.

brings me no joy to say that Fukuyama nailed it
But supposing that the world has become "filled up," so to speak, with liberal democracies, such that there exist no tyranny and oppression worthy of the name against which to struggle?
Experience suggests that if men cannot struggle on behalf of a just cause because that just cause was victorious in an earlier gen-eration, then they will struggle against the just cause. They will struggle for the sake of struggle. They will struggle, in other words, out of a certain boredom: for they cannot imagine living in a world without struggle. And if the greater part of the world in which they live is characterized by peaceful and prosperous liberal democracy, then they will struggle against that peace and pros-perity, and against democracy.

This is *the* main continuity between neo-fascism and the 20th Century variety. Erich Fromm argued exactly this in "Escape From Freedom," saying that modernity left many alienated and socially dislocated--and fascist strongmen promised to restore meaning and purpose to their lives.

I liked End Times Fascism but I thought Klein and Taylor were deluded when they said deliveryism would win the masses over at the polls and it looks like the Brazilian election is proving my skepticism. (I mean, the 2024 election already did that!)

The big difference is that my family background is much more working class than bougie, and so despite the surface affinities here, I felt less social anxiety in a place where my neighbors and I often literally didn't speak the same language.

In a place full of people from Brazil, Ecuador, Portugal, Mexico and many other Latin American countries (the Uruguayans came out in force during the 2010 World Cup!) a tall, pale, auburn-haired Midwesterner like me looked really out of place. The thing is, no one ever made me feel unwelcome.

Was back in my old Newark neighborhood (The Ironbound) today and was reminded of how much I loved living there. One big reason was that I stuck out so much that for the first time in my life I didn't have social anxiety about fitting in because there was no way that was going to happen anyway.
