Insane how fast "learning to program requires thinking" became "no one who didn't learn to program could have ever learned to think" for some of you

Son's school is back open as usual today. However, a narrative has emerged in the parents WhatsApp that school is not a safe place for their children to be, so some parents will not be sending their kids in today. Maybe at 36°C it was safer for kids to be at home(?) than school...

Just read my kids a book about a moose who gets teased for having a long moustache. The moustache negatively impacts his quality of life. Obviously there's only one solution! Go no-contact with his moose friends and family and run off to live in a cave. What's the moral of the story?

Re-watching Stargate SG1 now it's on netflix. Much harder to suspend the disbelief in 2026 - not the sci-fi/alien/alternate-history aspects, but the bit where the US military altruistically rescues the alien refugees and brings them back to earth.

Even though CVE-2025-627288 is nonsense, you might still need to mitigate it in #Umbraco. Here's how you can. As well as a bit of a breakdown of why it's nonsense. dev.to/jasonelkin/m...

Would love to know how many people actually install Adobe Genuine Service. Surely there can't be enough people using BOTH pirated Adobe software and installing Creative Cloud to make this "feature" worthwhile?
The Adobe Creative Cloud installer. Circled in yellow is a checkbox, with text that reads:

My laptop used to have a noisy capacitor. I kinda liked it, it made different frequency noises under different workloads. It would occasionally chug like an old HDD - bringing a little bit of nostalgia with it. My laptop no longer makes this sound. I miss it.

Worked on Usborne book's websites some years ago. Keeping track of links was a serious undertaking and a major feature of some of their books. They'd buy a TLD for every book of note too - never known anyone before or since spend so much on domain renewals. www.bbc.co.uk/news/article...

Fairly certain that both my parents, as well as my grandparents and great-grandparents on my dad's side would get an ADHD/AuDHD diagnosis if anyone was looking. I will have been the first in my family to be "counted". Anecdotal I know, but I feel like prevalence has always been high.

The kids' versions of the Old Testament stories miss out on some amazing subplots, and we rarely revisit them as adults. We looked at a chunk of Genesis in this morning's service, and it's amazing how many people were surprised by details they knew nothing about.

No, data centres don't work like that. Data storage is tiered. Your old emails and photos will be on arrays of mechanical disks that draw absolutely minimal power until somebody requests data which is stored on them - at which point spinning them up uses way more power than if you'd left them alone.

I just want my laptop to sleep, and stay asleep until I wake it up - push the power button, or open the lid. Not randomly wake up and cook itself in my bag. Not wake up when I plug it in, or unplug it. Not to say it's going to sleep, turn off the screen, then stay awake.

Tomorrow's dinner is on. New chimney/smokestack and upgraded fire-basket are doing a great job - even if it did mean grinding metal outside on the hottest day of the year.
A UDS - Ugly Drum Smoker, composed of an upright black-painted 40 gallon steel drum with two copper pipes, about half the length of the drum, attached vertically to its side and entering the drum at the bottom. The pipes are terminated with ball valves with bright red handles. From the back of the drum protrudes a tall chimney, about half the height again of the drum. A small amount of thin white smoke is exiting the chimney. The drum has a plain steel lid with two handles. Attached to the handle of one ball valve is a bright orange thermometer transmitter with two wires entering the drum under the lid.

In the background a 6' dark wooden fence runs from the left of the shot and meets a dark wooden shed to the right. The drum sits on a wooden plinth, itself straddling a boundary between a dead lawn and block paving. Behind this a border with bark chippings and two small shrubs.

Unpopular #umbraco opinion. Multi-site Umbraco instances are an anti-pattern. Any benefit is almost always due to inefficiencies elsewhere in the dev/test/content-editing pipelines. You ultimately pay with reduced performance and agility that's hard/expensive to claw back.
