This #paleoart of #Pteranodon standing on a wave-crashed rock seems to be a favourite for some, judging by steady print sales over the last 10 years. I recall it coming together quickly, probably because I did it for my own enjoyment and fully engaged with my impulses towards romantic art.

A moody male Pteranodon longiceps, sporting an overbite and a giant, slender headcrest, stands on a dark, narrow rock amid a swirling, crashing sea. The next wave's height will reveal whether this guy is the biggest badass to ever bear membranous wings or a grade-A moron for standing on a tiny rock in such a violent sea.

In case anyone missed my little X-Files point and click daydream

Mulder, Scully, Skinner, and the Lone Gunmen, all drawn in a cartoony style.

My wife and I are watching a little bit of The X-Files again and I've been doodling
along.

Imagine if you will: a five act point-and-click where you switch between Mulder and Scully depending on what kind of clues and puzzles you're working with. The Lone Gunmen get their own episode during Act 4 but they all move together like a single character. Tone is 70% comedy 30% paranormal horror.

Scully: "Mulder, you can't combine those."
Mulder, trying to tie a stick of dynamite to a taxidermied pheasant using half a shoelace: "Ancient Roman augurs read omens into the flight paths of birds all the time, Scully."

Haven't gotten the Hand of Fire book yet, but that don't stop me from wanting to talk. I assume that everyone else knew about Andrei Molotiu's writings about this long before I did. The Dream Machine should be right below. This is one of the very few non-collage pieces of art Jack is known to have done for himself. I.e., there was no client. (His collages are a whole other topic we could jump on. Does Hatfield?) It's gigantic and I can't look at it enough. Neither could he -- it was over his desk for the last fifteen years of his life.

Now, I'm not an art scholar, so please excuse my flailing. Is this abstract? Or representational? I feel like all of the small parts of this could be constructed in some 3D sculpture. They are pistons and turbines and valves and switches. But when you add them up, they become shapes and ideas rather than objects. That face on the far right? The white part, like the front quarters of an insect? Is there a narrative here? I feel like there's an implied narrative (i.e. the machine probably hums to life and one part influences another, a narrative of something functioning) but not an overt one. If I look at it I might assign meaning and movement to it -- it's God's iPod -- but does that mean I'm bringing storyline to the party? Because there are other times where it's a just visual feast, as abstract as you want to get. There was no commercial intent to this piece.

Aerotitan sudamericanus: a new portrait of the Patagonian azhdarchid pterosaur. Aerotitan is known only from a very fragmentary fossil of a partial rostrum, so this depiction is largely speculative… but was fun to do. #SciArt
