A cool new pathway that could explain how lysosomal BMP synthesis is decoupled from mitochondrial cardiolipin synthesis although both are structurally derived from PG!

What a fantastic #LipidCode conference in Dresden, I learned so much and met so many fantastic people! If your head seems to explode with excitement and new ideas it's a sure sign you had a great #lipidtime. Thanks to the amazing organisers @lipid.bsky.social and @fedorovalab.bsky.social!

Lipids build the membranes of all cells, but identifying their precise functions is extremely challenging. Here’s our attempt to change that: How to find and understand lipid-protein interactions, by Katelyn Cook & company. www.biorxiv.org/content/10.6...

Reading this made my day! Elegant experiments, convincing data and a crazy mechanism: Fuel switch and adrenergic stimulation converge on intra-mitochondrial calcium that induces mito swelling to physically release mitos from LDs. This enhances lipolysis by increasing LD accessibility to lipases 🤯

The elephant in the room: impact factor
Summary: This Editorial offers an honest look at impact factor trends in developmental biology, explains how Development serves its community, and makes the case that sustaining developmental biology ...

Excessive fatty acid oxidation selectively depletes 18:1 and 18:2 fatty acids needed for cardiolipin remodelling - does that mean that mitochondria literally eat themselves?

What membrane properties do cells maintain through regulation of lipid metabolism? In a new paper, we identify intrinsic curvature stress as one such parameter and show how different (eukaryotic) cell types employ different lipids to do that www.cell.com/cell-reports...

Active regulation of intrinsic curvature by eukaryotic phospholipid metabolism
Cells maintain membrane function by actively balancing the molecular shape of their lipids. Milshteyn et al. find that, when subjected to high hydrostatic pressure, yeast and human cells, but not bact...

How much does it cost to buy your way onto a scientific paper? To answer this question (and better understand the global market for academic reputation manipulation), we compiled BuyTheBy, a massive dataset of thousands of advertisements from paper mills in seven different countries. Link below!
A boxplot with authorship slot (1st author through 5th author) on the x axis and price in USD on the y axis. Prices are split by paper mill of origin.

What a joy to defend my PhD and kiss the Gänseliesel last Friday! Crazy to think that this is the moment I've been working towards since setting foot in the Department as a small Master's student in 2020. Thanks to Stefan and all the Jakobs lab members past and present who were part of this journey!
