✨ 36 years ✨ An Avocet ringed as a chick at RSPB Titchwell, Norfolk, in 1990 smashed longevity records this year! It was sighted at RSPB Middleton Lakes in June 2026. The average lifespan of an Avocet is approximately 6 years, so this is an incredible age. 🙌 📷 Philip Croft / BTO
An Avocet, a wading bird with black and white plumage, twists its head to preen under its wing with its long decurved bill, as the sun reflects off rippled water that it is standing in.

Couldn’t resist another stop at Seaton Wetlands on the way home from work for a second round with this juvenile pectoral sandpiper. It put on a great show in the evening shadow of the hide. Amazing views considering I’d never seen one a week ago! #Birds #DevonBirds #WildlifePhotography

Most of the time I see Red-necked Phalaropes (Phalaropus lobatus) they are swimming, often in their characteristic tight foraging spins, so I was really excited to see this one walk right up to me before then taking flight. #bird #beach #nature

Shorebird migration uses the Western Hudson Bay coastline as a Shorebird Highway. At this spot in early August, we saw hundreds of Pectoral Sandpipers that were so fat, they were shaped like footballs. Good luck, lil buddies!

ok but why does this owl at a watering hole in the Namib desert (which I saw via the watering hole's webcam) look like a little old English lady-owl on an evening walk who kicked off her shoes but left her stockings on to cool her feet in a pond on the outskirts of the village?
Nighttime picture of a human-established watering hole in the Namib Desert. It's round, apparently concrete, with a small concrete "island" in the center, and there is an owl at the edge, which we see from behind. The owl's wings are folded against its body in a manner that suggests a short jacket; its legs look like the owl is wearing white stockings, and its head is turned to the left; we can see one eye (shining in the watering hole's low light), and a very little bit of its beak.

Today is International Migratory Bird Day, so it seems appropriate to post this Blackburnian Warbler that was at our pond a few days ago. He spent considerable time doing some personal grooming. #birds #migration #warblers #Ancaster #HamOnt
A Blackburnian warbler on a horizontal branch with leaves coming out. His orange and black head is turned back to peck at feathers on his back, and his white and gray tail is fanned wide open, so that all you see is the tail feathers and his head.
