ICE shot a New Yorker today while his five year old was in the car. But tomorrow, they're going to try to villainize this father and make themselves victims. We’re on the scene to tell ICE and Donald Trump: New York ain't no place to play with. We will protect our neighbors.

"In addition, the Target Corporation must stop offering their Bronx properties as private staging sites for ICE, in compliance with requests from New York officials. Target opening up large active retail parking lots for paramilitary activity is unacceptable and places the entire community at risk.”

That’s a great point. I think that collapse also points to the shrinking of professional networks that would help you write and promote a book. Being a solo Substack writer creates a very different professional network than being a journalist in a newsroom.

Good and depressing. I guess it’s not that surprising that the authority crisis made its way to books.

I remember a faculty member in my department saying this 20 years ago when the grad students at NYU were unionizing. Astonishing how long a shitty argument can last.

Annoyance, frustration, disappointment - fine. But you have nothing to feel guilty about and changing your schedule doesn’t make you a bad or inconsistent writer.

It’s OK to change your writing schedule when you want/need to. I’ve been speaking with writers who feel bad that they have to change their schedule and the fact is that life changes.

Any felonies taking place at Delaney Hall are the crimes against humanity by ICE and the GEO Group, who kidnap and abuse human beings who've done nothing wrong and brutalize anyone who protests Gov. Mikie Sherrill's goons are attacking people trying to stop this injustice. She is an utter disgrace

I cannot say this loudly enough: we need everyone to know what is happening at Delaney Hall. 300 detainees inside are on Day 7 of a hunger and labor strike as of today. ICE is beating, gassing, tasing and assaulting protestors outside every night, and it is getting worse.

Three signs that bookclub email you just got is probably a scam 🚩 1) Generic gmail (or similar) address 2) The book club, award, or organization doesn’t exist when you look it up 3) The email is overly long, vague, and full of excessive praise (often AI-written)

Writing an email to destroy the hopes and dreams of writers with wildly optimistic ideas about book writing and publication timelines. Better to be disappointed early in the process when there’s time to course correct!

While a candidate, @mayor.nyc.gov pledged to commit 0.5% of the city’s budget to public libraries. Unfortunately, Mayor Mamdani has broken this promise in his preliminary FY27 budget, released yesterday, where he allocated 0.39% to libraries. This amount is well below the promised 0.5%
Image showing Mayor Mamdani looking frustrated, with a text overlaid that reads “NYC Public Library Action Network” at the top, and in large bold letters text that reads “Mayor Mamdani did not honor his commitment to allocate 0.5% of the city expense budget to NYC public libraries in his preliminary budget” and then in smaller font below, there is text that reads “visit NYCPLAN.ORG for more information”

Kind of wild that while food assistance was withheld from millions of families, one Trump-supporting billionaire (Ellison) saw his net worth grow more this year than the entire SNAP budget. And the YTD gains of the other four richest men would’ve fully covered salaries for all 2M federal employees.
Table showing the five richest men in the U.S from Bloombergs billionaire list
., all in technology. Elon Musk tops the list with a net worth of $461B and a year-to-date gain of $28.2B. Larry Ellison is second at $300B with a $107B YTD gain. Jeff Bezos has $268B (+$29.5B YTD), Larry Page $250B (+$81.9B YTD), and Sergey Brin $234B (+$75.5B YTD). Each row also lists last-day change, country (all United States), and industry (all Technology).

When I work with junior faculty writing books — especially Black women — one of their primary concerns is that the book they're writing will be banned. Even if its not an outright ban, they're worried the books won't be assigned in classes for the very reasons being discussed here today.

If *your department head and your dean* can be removed for supporting your colleague in teaching in their area of expertise, then you have no academic freedom. In a functional sense, you don't work at a university at all.
