I remember a faculty member in my department saying this 20 years ago when the grad students at NYU were unionizing. Astonishing how long a shitty argument can last.

It’s OK to change your writing schedule when you want/need to. I’ve been speaking with writers who feel bad that they have to change their schedule and the fact is that life changes.

I cannot say this loudly enough: we need everyone to know what is happening at Delaney Hall. 300 detainees inside are on Day 7 of a hunger and labor strike as of today. ICE is beating, gassing, tasing and assaulting protestors outside every night, and it is getting worse.

I went to my local ice cream shop (Sugar Hill Creamery) yesterday and they had ballots for participatory budgeting in NYC. They had even collaborated on an ice cream flavor called “The People’s Money.” It was such an innovative way to get the community involved.

While a candidate, @mayor.nyc.gov pledged to commit 0.5% of the city’s budget to public libraries. Unfortunately, Mayor Mamdani has broken this promise in his preliminary FY27 budget, released yesterday, where he allocated 0.39% to libraries. This amount is well below the promised 0.5%
Image showing Mayor Mamdani looking frustrated, with a text overlaid that reads “NYC Public Library Action Network” at the top, and in large bold letters text that reads “Mayor Mamdani did not honor his commitment to allocate 0.5% of the city expense budget to NYC public libraries in his preliminary budget” and then in smaller font below, there is text that reads “visit NYCPLAN.ORG for more information”

Kind of wild that while food assistance was withheld from millions of families, one Trump-supporting billionaire (Ellison) saw his net worth grow more this year than the entire SNAP budget. And the YTD gains of the other four richest men would’ve fully covered salaries for all 2M federal employees.
Table showing the five richest men in the U.S from Bloombergs billionaire list
., all in technology. Elon Musk tops the list with a net worth of $461B and a year-to-date gain of $28.2B. Larry Ellison is second at $300B with a $107B YTD gain. Jeff Bezos has $268B (+$29.5B YTD), Larry Page $250B (+$81.9B YTD), and Sergey Brin $234B (+$75.5B YTD). Each row also lists last-day change, country (all United States), and industry (all Technology).

When I work with junior faculty writing books — especially Black women — one of their primary concerns is that the book they're writing will be banned. Even if its not an outright ban, they're worried the books won't be assigned in classes for the very reasons being discussed here today.

All writing you do for your book (or whatever project you're working on) is real writing. Outlines, rough drafts, random bullet points, notes on cocktail napkins, ideas in your notes app. It's all real. There's no fake writing.
