Autumn candle #photography #autumn #scotland
Snapshot of a grey stone wall with a skirt of crunchy autumn leaves, and leaning incongruously against the wall is a bright, peeling wooden board, painted purple and covered with curving black graffiti, the only legible part of which is a cartoonish candle.

For several weeks, I have been haunted by this poem by #Cavafy. The translator is Avi Sharon. I appreciate how Cavafy, never didactic, almost always trusts the readers to puzzle through the context and ambiguities themselves. #poetry
Great Procession of Clergy and Laymen.

A great procession of clergy and laymen with all of the guilds clearly represented makes its way through the streets, the squares, and under the gates of the renowned city of Antioch.
At the head of this imposing parade stands a beautiful young boy, dressed in white, bearing in his upraised hands the Cross, the holy Cross, our strength and hope.
The pagans, so arrogant before,
seem reserved and timid now; they distance themselves hastily from the procession. Let them remain far away from us always (those who fail to renounce their
error).
Onward proceeds the holy Cross; and in every neighbourhood where Christians live in piety
it brings great consolation and great joy: the pious stand at the doors of their homes and full of exultation they bow in reverence to the strength and salvation of the world, the Cross.
This is an annual Christian festival.
But today it is celebrated more openly, as you see.
For the state has been delivered at last.
The sacrilegious, the abominable Julian no longer reigns.
Let us pray for Jovian, most pious of men.

Trial of live facial recognition in London stations ends with a false positive and no arrests
Freedom of information request finds six-month trial cost £320,000, used almost 100 police hours and led to just one – incorrect – alert A six-month trial of live facial recognition (LFR) technology in London’s railway stations that cost more than £320,000 and almost 100 hours of police officers’ time ended in one false match against a watchlist of suspects and no arrests. More than half a million faces were scanned between February and July this year in some of the capital’s busiest transport hubs during the British Transport Police (BTP) trial of the surveillance technology, which aimed to help catch offenders and people breaching court orders. This is now one of my favourite Indian 'genre' novels (or novels, period) of the 21st century, tbh, and like the best ones, treats the boundaries of 'genre' as borders to be breached, explored, language a lantern in the wilderness. Essential for all readers of 'weird' fiction.

Science fiction is currently roughly six percent of the current fiction market in North America and fantasy is (again, roughly) four times that. There's definitely more money in fantasy. In all genres, I will note, the money is very unequally distributed. (Horror... fluctuates)

I won’t lie, it’s a bit overwhelming to see the work hyperbolized by many press outlets, including the university. We did not discover a new organ, or that you have two consciousnesses, etc! I’m excited for the general positive recognition, (especially the coverage from the Chronicle by Jack Lee)

The brain is a single organ. But it may not start that way, study suggests
A Stanford-led study challenges the idea that the brain develops from one common pool of early cells — and could help researchers model diseases such as ALS.

A graphic of various Three-Lobed Burning Eye's cover artwork images: A blue multi-armed monster standing next to a fox and what I think might be a blanket with eyes. Maybe it's a burnt-out tree - still with the eyes, though. And oh, yeah, they're bloodshot.

Next, there's someone wearing a helmet that's somewhere between medieval knight and plague doctor next to a creature that seems to be the big sister of Aku from Samurai Jack.

Then there's a wasp thingy with a skull for a head wearing a gold crown, and flying above a black hat that's sprouted tentacles. The hat-wearer peers at the reader, but we can only see its red pupils.

I don't know how to describe the last one, but it has lots of faces, eyes, and color. And ghosts.

Working thru troubling aspects of a story’s moral assumptions is not only part of growing up, it’s a key skill in literary & historical analysis at secondary/high school level. A child acquires the mental library that they gradually analyse in an increasingly mature way. Authority is questioned etc
