Alright, internet, which game did I play? I’ll post hints for a bit until the final reveal, unless someone gets (or googles) it first. 😁
A pen and marker map of a structure built up on mostly one island and three smaller islands, separated from what appears to be mainland, with occasional labeled areas. Colored areas include pathways, grass and trees, cliffs, and ocean. Structures are uncolored. A clipboard holder is visible at the top of the photo.

my extremely petty gripe with AI is that I am paranoid about using em dashes — one of my favorite punctuations — now that I know how commonly AI uses them in writing, and I can’t use the verb “grok” anymore which was a really fun and useful word before it got absolutely ruined

It’s time for another photo! This was a fabtastic collection of lichen and moss on a bare yet vigorously budding deciduous shrub in the parking lot rather than the garden proper. I was quite taken with the dense setae on the buds.

又のオレゴンガーデンからの写真。 光と影を混ぜるともっと綺麗なイメージを作ることになるだと思います。でも、撮った後、目のイメージに比べると、いつもちょっとがっかりします。目が素晴らしい機会ですね。

Take the estrogen, if that’s what you need to do! (Or the testosterone, if that’s more your style!)
A collage showing two photos of the same person: on the left in a men’s dress shirt and tie with short hair, a noticeably high, balding forehead, narrow eyes, a slight unibrow, a closely trimmed mustache, soul patch, and very small beard covering only the chin, and an overall masculine look, smiling but tired; and on the right 10 or so years older with long gently curly hair framing the face and exposed upper chest, bright open eyes, separate and shaped eyebrows, no facial hair, fuller cheeks and narrower jaw and neck, and an overall feminine look, with her tongue stuck playfully out.

I found myself at the Oregon Garden this weekend. I took so many photos of things I was excited to see, my camera roll overflows! For documenting the experience, I guess to start, here is a shrub I admired for its flat, scalloped growth planes and the vibrant contrast between its new to old growth.

Bad (but kind of awesome?) selfie from assessments last night. I had to make sure my hair looked not incredibly awful after taking off my helmet. Damn do, I miss derby!
Photograph of a woman squinting at the camera with her head tilted forward, to get a better view of the top of her head. She is wearing a white tank top jersey and glasses. The background is a nondescript wall with an exposed electrical conduit protected by equally nondescript painted PVC pipe.

AI stuff feels opposite. Much AI art has the form of traditional art - you get drawings, videos, etc - but without an artists' intention. As is the case with sampling, there's less perceived craft. There's not, however, the intent behind it. There's no artist. It's art shaped, but is not art

This feels of a piece with the modern movements expanding the question of what art is, though if inverted Compare to Duchamp's "Fountain" in which something that is NOT typical art is presented as such, by intention and setting It isn't art-shaped, but is art

Bluesky is a wonderful place that has flourished in large part because of its artists and intolerance towards facists/Nazis. The Updated policy currently going into effect Oct 15 could fuck that up and we should be very vocal about it. Here are some specific things to mention in feedback (THREAD)

this iconic advertising copywriter named Kathy Hepinstall Parks died over the weekend and I wanted to share something from her website I thought Bluesky would like
Why should I write better when a machine can do it for me?
Because actually no one can do it for you, because your voice is unique among all the people on earth. Siri never petted a horse's neck. Alexa has never been ghosted by the captain of the football team. But you have lived, your heart is beating, you have suffered, and you have something important to say. It's a human's job, to use words, and whatever job you give to a machine, that part of your brain goes dark. Maybe it's worth it when it comes to remembering phone numbers and directions, but when that part of your brain that uses words goes dark, that's a vast area that's very close to your soul. Don't let some internet platform convince you that what you have to say and create isn't worthwhile. Words are the echo of your soul. Honing that echo matters.

The heartbreaking thing about this is that there’s already a proven way to invest lots of money in a knowledge machine that produces unforeseeable results that include fantastically profitable ideas (and some life-saving ones) and generally benefit society and this machine is called a university

I have no sufficient words to express it but PBS is one of the all time great American institutions of learning and culture. A bastion of American excellence sent out to the larger world. I shouldn’t be surprised that it’s being targeted. But it’s unfathomably sad and to the detriment of us all.

The Bush administration disappeared people too, sent them to a different gulag at Gitmo and other black sites, kidnapped people off the street of Milan, tortured them, in the name of "a different kind of war." We didn't come close to holding them accountable. We're seeing the cost of that now.

Working on my public comment for the government's "Development of an Artificial Intelligence (AI) Action Plan." Lemme know what you think. Due today by 11:59 pm ET. www.federalregister.gov/documents/20...
I am a writer, filmmaker, and photographer.

So-called "A.i." technologies like ChatGPT and Dall-E are based on the theft of my work and the work of millions of creators like me.

So-called "A.i." text technologies like ChatGPT constantly present false information as fact, spreading dangerous ignorance and disinformation.

So-called "A.i." technologies like Dall-E allow the creation of fake imagery that enables dangerous political disinformation.

So-called "A.i." technologies like ChatGPT consume massive amounts of energy and water and endanger the environment.

My conclusion is that the current implementation of these technologies is immoral and unethical and violates copyright law. These technologies should not be encouraged, aided, used, or subsidized by the government in any way.

One very specific suggestion is that a so-called "A.i." company should be required to obtain the permission of every single creator for every single work it wants to use before it uses it, and the company should be required to immediately remove all work for which it do not have such permission from their databases.

Thank you for your attention.
