It’s time for another photo! This was a fabtastic collection of lichen and moss on a bare yet vigorously budding deciduous shrub in the parking lot rather than the garden proper. I was quite taken with the dense setae on the buds.

I found myself at the Oregon Garden this weekend. I took so many photos of things I was excited to see, my camera roll overflows! For documenting the experience, I guess to start, here is a shrub I admired for its flat, scalloped growth planes and the vibrant contrast between its new to old growth.

今日もう一つなのサンフランシスコで撮った写真を投稿します。これは「Monterrey Cypress」（ヒノキ科の部分）です。写真を撮った時は知らなかったけど、この木はカリフォルニア州の北以外、自然に生えません。けれども、とても綺麗だから、他の国や場所で植えてあります。

先週、サンフランシスコに行きました。色々の植物写真を撮ったけど、その中で一番気が入ったものはこれです。海の際や風吹いてある丘の地に育つ通り、葉が強くて、少し革のようのものです。でも、その冴えない景色から、そんなに鮮やかな花が出ます。見たと少し驚きで嬉しかったの。あの日は誕生日だから世界からプレゼントをうけたかんじでした。

今からの所、引っ越すまで、普通の投稿の代わりに描きだけのアカウントになるそうですよ。クリスマスに貰った細いペンで描いたガーゴイルです。ペンを使うのは大変難しいです。間違ったことを正確にするのは無理で、変な形を作だちゃうとその変な形を示す仕方ないです。とにかく、この子は可愛いですね？描いたことには喜びました。

ようやくやった！今日は、始めてから丸で半年前、徳間アニメ絵本の「隣のトトロ」を読んでしまいました。始まる時、言葉が大体もう知っていたのに、読書力が弱かったのでとてもとても遅く読んでいました。よくほったらかしたり、難しさにしょんぼり、時々思いように進みました。所が、今、字や言葉をスキャンするのが出来るし、カナだけで書いた言葉でもよく認識するし、最後の章を速くて飛び読めました。その間に青空での日本語で書いてある投稿をよく読んで、逆転裁判の最初の章をやって、いい練習がよくありました。この本の初めと終わりの大きい区別はそれらの結果でしょうね。 #日本語勉強記録

For my invertebrate-loving followers: several shield bugs very excited about, or perhaps excited by, a brilliant Pride-of-Barbados blossom cluster. Seen in a neighborhood walk in Austin, Texas. #invertebrate

Three dark shield bugs gathered on and near a cluster of bright red-orange and yellow flowers and buds/fruit. Two appear to be mating while the third looks on.

For #makeaterriblecomicday2024 I decided to get a little bit of the story that I’ve been gradually trying to piece together out of my head and onto paper. There are so many things I don’t like about it but also hey! That’s an actual completed comic page! Until today, I was too afraid to even try.

1. A woman looking over her shoulder: “Wait, why are you following me?” A response: “I don’t know, it just seems kinda obvious you need the help.”
2. A heavy-built woman continues: “I don’t know you. You *definitely* don’t know me. But you tried to help.”
3. The larger woman, gesturing: “Why did you even do that? It’s not like you could have made a difference.” The smaller woman start to respond: “I—“
4. The larger woman continues: “But thank you. I’ll see you to some place safe, little thing,” while walking alongside and placing an arm behind the smaller woman.
5. In a wide panel with only the top half of one’s head and the bottom half of the other visible, the smaller woman, looking surprised, says “!!”, and then continues “I’m not *that* little!” The larger woman looks down at her, slightly amused.

Tonight’s good, and also last week’s attempt at the same. Today was peach and a sautéed collard green salad on the side, earlier an arugula salad, either way wish a dashimaki-inspired bacon and havarti omelette (?) / egg wrap. Both delish! 🥰

Photo from what may very well be my last roller derby game. I’m really happy it was a good one. 🥰 I’m gonna miss my league so much, and I really hope I have more derby in my future, but… if that’s not in store, this was a lovely way to go out.

Not the best photo, but my girl Chili doesn’t get nearly enough time in my feed. She’s a sweetheart and refuses to give up on being in my lap even if I’m busy trying to work. When I do have time (hands, really) to offer her, she is always so pleased. 🥰

一昨日、大きい雷雨が付近に襲いました。木の小さい枝もでかい枝もあちこち落ち散らしました。うちの家は害に免れたけど、隣人の家が大きい枝に危害を受けました。😣 とにかく、その嵐からいい結果もありましたよ。私は昨日出かける時、車が小さな枝に覆われて、片付けながら小さな枝から抜けた地衣類を一つ見つけました。写真を撮って、それから近くの木に置きました。地衣類は「holdfast」を失ったらまだ新しいのを作るかどうかわからないけど、正解の行動だと思いました。

A very minuscule contribution to #invertefest on the last few hours of the last possible day: my jotted memory of this very small friend I made while gardening recently. Did you know that millipedes can lift their little heads up and look at you? I did not! It was very cute before going on its way.

最近旅行でとても面白い地衣類の戦いを発見しました。一本の木で三種の地衣類があるのは毎日のことですけど、普通は周縁がはっきりありますね？そんなに混じった状況が私の経験にちょっと珍しい事だと思いました。

I feel like some of the illustrators on blue sky here needed to know what the bottom of a rollerskate looks like, so here's mine.

I found a few more #lichen friends on my second day in the hill country. I wanted to get at least one good one on a rock instead of on wood, and was happy when I found one near a creek! I also might have spent some time in that creek myself. 🥰

Various mostly crustose (I think?) lichens growing on a large hand-processed log with a flat, curved surface.

An isolated orange-colored lichen on a processed wooden log, with a few other more common green-gray, and a few black, lichens in various other spots.

One or possibly two flat green-gray lichens growing along the edges of a small indentation or hole in an old, processed log.

A small, bright yellow-green lichen with bright orange apothecia in the center, anchored to a rock. Various other mostly black lichens (I think?) are also visible.
