I haven't done everything right in my career, but I knew early on I wanted to say no to lots of things. Jr people are told they need to say yes to everything (referee requests, invitations to go places) with some fear hanging over it (you don't want to make enemies!) and I think it's mostly BS.

This year has been challenging in many ways, and I have immense gratitude for the kindness and support of family, community, and people like you who have continued to stand by me through everything. It means the world, and I wanted you to be among the first to know that squash is in the oven and kale is in the fridge.

As many of you are aware, ve been navigating one of the most challenging periods of my day while waiting for dinner.
Facing baseless federal hunger brought on by not eating since lunch, fighting for the working kids of this country, and now caring for a mean toddler and helping him grow up in a world that isn't always easy. But it has also reminded me exactly why I do this work and who I do it for.
I will never stop working to eat dinner. I will never stop fighting for what is right, even when there is also some feta in the fridge. And I will never stop being so very thankful that you are by my side in this important work and that there is tahini in the pantry for dressing

I’ve seen jobs described as tenure-track and tenure-line but today I saw “tenure-stream” which somehow sounds more peaceful. I guess you just float along and eventually you come to tenure. Or is this tenure…?

I really miss the old econ job market calendar with interviews in January. It was predictable, gave more time for students to be “done”, and mostly avoided students having to make hard decisions about very early job offers.

Yeah, I get that for sure. Here we just rely on the evaluation scores, but evals are optional and I have about 25% of my students filling one out lately. Nobody seems to talk about selection bias though.

I'm convinced most professors at fancy schools would last about 3 minutes at a regular public university. It's just a completely different type of student that requires a completely different approach inside and outside the classroom. Yet everything I read about teaching is by the fancy people.
