It took me a while to warm up to it, but I'm digging The Menzingers 'new album. It's no "After the Party," but still good shit.
Album art for The Menzingers' "Everything I Ever Saw," featuring Shin Noguchi's photograph of a small child using a tower viewer to look out over a short wall at the ocean on the far left, and a tall palm tree on the far right, the wide coast, cloudy sky, wall, and artificial turf between them.

I don't usually spend a newsletter on the latest big reveal from a monthly superhero comic, but I couldn't help but reflect on Miracleman's introduction in the Marvel Universe.

Will Miracles Never Cease?
Miracleman was like a comic book urban legend when I first started reading comics regularly. Now he's fighting alongside Wolverine and Spider-Man. How in the world did we get here?

There are rumors that Marvel will reveal the core X-Men cast at D23, and that the movie will focus on the original five X-Men. Don't know if there's any truth to that, but to get ahead of the deluge of "O5 X-Men Comics You Should Read" online lists, let me promise you it's these 4 and only these 4:

So Apple debuted a new iPhone Pro and a new $2000 iPhone that you treat like a New York pizza slice. No new base model? No new "budget" phone? Guess they've got the "we only make expensive stuff for rich people now" mentality that has also infected so many other companies lately.

Reminder that Eternals is good, actually.
A tweet from Variety linking to an article titled "Chloe Zhao Defends Comic book Movies":

Chloé Zhao "loved" directing Marvel's "Eternals" and defends comic book movies: "It’s important to not write off stories because we don’t consider them high art."

“For any of you who love anime, I know you know this was a girl’s dream come true. Comic books are the western equivalent of [manga]. They are very different, but I live in the west, and that’s what I had access to. I do feel it’s important to not write off stories because we don’t consider them high art. The purpose of storytelling for me, humbly, is to create containers for people … to try to process what they need to process. Archetypes are such a great way to do it — and we see them in myths — is because it’s something we all share.”

Given how much worse the Director's Cut of Donnie Darko is than the original, I'd say it's probably best if Kelly didn't keep expanding and explaining the movie. But as someone who watched the movie way too many times as a teenager, I'll probably end up reading this out of morbid curiosity anyway.

"The first thing that strikes me about Cannon... is its rhythmic pacing. Aside from a handful of pointed exceptions, every page of Cannon has four panels of equal size, arranged in a 2×2 orientation. A box of boxes in which the title character is trapped. A steady heartbeat that they cannot escape."

Axios writer: I melted my brain with AI. Not only can I no longer read, but I don't even understand the purpose of reading anymore. Here's how you can also do this. www.axios.com/2026/08/11/r...
Axios: AI has become my reading buddy as I've plowed through my summer book list, helping me keep track of plots and characters, unpack themes, and make sense of wordy, old prose.

Why it matters: The way many of us actually read books — a few pages before bed, a chapter at the beach, another on a plane — makes it easy to lose the thread. AI can help you pick it back up without starting over.
📖 I really got into using AI while reading James Fenimore Cooper's "The Last of the Mohicans." The text was far too dense for casual vacation reading. My first prompt asked:

"I'd like a guide as I read The Last of the Mohicans who can help me understand what I've read and where the story is, without giving spoilers or getting ahead of my progress. Can you do this, chapter by chapter?"
The robot agreed: "Cooper's sentences are long and his diction is archaic."

I heard about the BrooklynVegan shutdown almost immediately after reading the first post in a while from the guy that ran their punk/emo/hardcore coverage, the intro to which was along the lines of "Hey, sorry I've been gone for a bit, but I just had a kid," and god this industry.
