The whole discourse about Glasgow city centre being unsafe in 2026 genuinely feels like a psyop at this point because it is so completely at odds with observable reality.

@womenforindy.bsky.social have put out a statement on the absolutely abhorrent SPUC fringe at SNP conference glad to see pushback on this and hope more groups follow suit - we cannot let groups like SPUC erode our rights with wedge issues like this

Our Statement On The SNP Conference Anti-Abortion Fringe Group

Women for Independence are absolutely appalled to see the Society for the Protection of Unborn Children, an anti-abortion group being platformed at the upcoming SNP conference.

Despite the event being presented as raising awareness on 'The reality of coerced abortion', this is merely a progressive veil for their outdated and bigoted beliefs.

The organisation is against the widespread use of contraception, morning after pills, abortion decriminalisation, most forms of sex education, and advocates for heavy restrictions to be placed on women's access to abortion.

We believe these measures, if implemented, would themselves amount to reproductive coercion of women to carry unwanted pregnancies.
Our Statement On The SNP Conference Anti-Abortion Fringe Group

The SPUC also has a deeply troubling record of homophobia, opposing same-sex marriage and encouraging parents to withdraw their children from sex and relationships education classes mentioning Igbtqia+ relationships.

We know these views don't align with the vast majority of party members, only two years ago party members passed a resolution to enshrine the right to abortion in the constitution of an independent Scotland.

We're shocked that in this day and age, a typically feminist party is actively choosing to platform this group. We're concerned about the message this sends to Scottish women - that our rights are up for debate and that the governing party supports that.

We call on the party to no longer permit this fringe group to go ahead - there is still time.

We highly encourage conference delegates to boycott this event, we need to send a clear message, that these kinds of extremist views are not welcome in the discourse on how to achieve an equal and independent Scotland.

Reform are bad actors debasing our parliament and making Scotland a less safe place to be. They will be defeated and I'll do my part in that, but I hope one day the likes of Thimas Kerr develop self awareness and shame and apologise for what they've done.

The Scottish Parliament reconvened when I was 9. Like every primary school kid in Scotland, my picture was on the construction walls. I have visited it, lived by it & and spent my adult life campaigning for it to be more powerful. Seeing it used to attack my neighbours makes me angry & sad (cont.)

Thomas was initially one of "Ruth's Tories" - a laughable branding of cuddly, Vicor of Dibley style conservatism that vanished under Johnson. Stephen rightly compared his namesake Thomas to the vile BNP - citing their long relationship. What's happend in Thomas' life to make him like this? (Cont.)

What really got me though was Tory Stephen Kerr - a man I have little in common with politically and indeed whose contributions & conduct in the chamber have agitated me in the past, warning Thomas Kerr about the path he is going down (cont.)

The proposer, Reform's Thomas Kerr started a pitch about lawlessness by those wearing face coverings. The veneer slipped almost instantly and he spent most of his time talking about islamic face coverings and used overtly racist insults to do so. No subtllty, just raw bigotry (cont.)

I listened to the face coverings debate in Holyrood and it filled me with sadness as well as anger. While there have been contentious - even unpleasent dogwhistle contributions in the chamber in the past, particularly around LGBTQ+ rights which are not acceptable, this hit a new low (cont.)

I see BBC Scotland, and the anti-independence press, all of whom made a huge song and dance about Gordon Brown's Vow in 2014, aren't too bothered that the Tories - one of the signatories of the Vow - have just ripped it up and now want to strip powers from Holyrood.

It’s fascinating that English progressives seem so keen to celebrate Burnham as a leftwing hope whereas in Scotland the view is ‘nope, it’s just words - prove it or beat it’. Independence provides a completely different prism. I feel genuine sympathy that English progressives seem to feel so trapped

Screenshot of an Instagram post with a picture of SNP campaigners and caption: Not the result we were hoping for, then. My congratulations to Lorenzo on his victory and I wish him well as Portobello Craigmillar's new Councillor.

We fought a strong campaign, and one that I really genuinely enjoyed being part of. Unfortunately, it seems, just not quite strong enough!

I'm incredibly grateful to everyone involved who supported me and who voted for me, not least my stellar campaign team and my endlessly supportive family. Now, time to relax for a bit, learn the lessons of this campaign, and move forward.

People will dismiss Malcolm Offord claiming that more than half of Scots are unemployed, but as the parent of a child out of work I really think it's serious. My daughter's been unemployed for almost three years and it's been really hard. There are so many barriers for toddlers getting into work!

If you aren't honest with people, you will not only continue to lose seats in the Central Belt - which we haven't really discussed why, you will alienate and lose Aberdeen and the North East too, while not giving them what's needed in terms of sustaonable oppeetunities (6/6).

I'll never criticise someone for advocating for good working conditions and compensation. And again, I want Aberdeen and the North East to be prosperous, but expectations need to be managed in terms of what that looks like, and I'm afraid its not likely to extend to six figures and a supercar (5/?)

Affuence was evident from the cars, houses, designer fashion and nightlife. It turned the head of this guy from a Highland village, but it wasn't representitive of how the rest of Scotland lived. Its not like that now, but for many, their formative years or most of your working life was that (4/?)

I did a non-oil subject where my placement was unpaid. Students doing Business Managment got a paid placement for a year. I remember queuing foe a coffee listening to them saying they had declined placements offering more than I would have gotten post graduation in full time work (3/?).

An issue is that when oil was bigger there, the salaries being paid - even for entry level positions, were exceedingly high. I can't think another industry that pays as much and its unlikely any replacement jobs will pay as much. I think people were used to that and not much else will cut it (2/3)

I studied and therefore lived there for four years, but have never worked in the sector. I want the city to be prosperous, but its irresponsible to promise jam tomorrow with new oil & gas. I want a just transition to sustainable, renewables jobs and other industries (1/2)

Glasgow and Edinburgh councils combined make up 20% of Scotland's population, Aberdeen makes up 3%. Even boiled down to pure electoral realpolitik, it doesn't make sense cor the SNP to prioritise Aberdeen's voters over other cities.

On Radio Scotland this morning, Reform's Scottish leader Malcolm Offord brushed off the serious allegations from the Channel 4 film with a cringe Billy Connolly joke. He also used the lefty climate activist line. He's proving to be the most inept leader I've seen in Holyrood.

Out for Indy's response to this week's Programme for Government. 🚨🏳️‍🌈🏳️‍⚧️
Out for Independence response to the Programme for Government:

e are disappointed with the Programme for Government’s lack of commitment to pushing ahead with a Scottish ban on conversion practices.

While we acknowledge the Scottish Government is engaging with the UK Government in good faith and has left the option for a Scottish bill open should they fail to deliver, the fact is the Labour Party has already proven itself untrustworthy when it comes to LGBTQIA+ rights. Their proposals are simply totally inadequate and will allow this abuse to continue.

We will keep pushing for a Scottish bill that will genuinely end conversion practices, to ensure the work of survivors and activists will not have been in vain.
