‘We are hopeful’: small signs of recovery for Scotland’s rare capercaillie bird
Number of males at RSPB Abernethy rises to 30, after ‘huge amount of work’ by conservationists in Highlands forests After decades of decline, there are signs of hope for the capercaillie, one of Britain’s most endangered birds. Populations of the charismatic grouse, which is found only in the Caledonian pine forests of the Scottish Highlands, have increased by 50%, from 20 males in 2020 to 30 in 2025 at RSPB Abernethy. For months, ministers have been pushing a false choice between nature and growth. Now, new research shows just how out of touch they are. With data from More In Common, it's time to set the record straight. 👇
A split graphic. Headings read: “While they make NOISE…” “The public makes SENSE.” On the left, politicians including Kier Starmer, Rachel Reeves and Steve Reed in Westminster gesture energetically, surrounded by cut-out speech tiles reading: “FURTHER AND FASTER”, “BUILD, BABY, BUILD”, “WE’RE TAKING ON THE NIMBYS”, and “STOP WORRYING ABOUT BATS & NEWTS”. Steve Reed wears a bright red “Build Baby Build” baseball cap. The right side shows a blurred green park scene with bold text: “2 in 3 say politicians are out of touch when it comes to nature.”

Our reaction to a further delay by the Scottish Government on the implementation of muirburn licencing.
Text that reads:

RSPB Scotland is deeply disappointed that yet another delay to the implementation of the muirburn provisions of the Wildlife Management and Muirburn Act 2024 has been announced by the Scottish Government.

Muirburn as a practice has been very weakly regulated since the Second World War and there were many examples of poor practice leading to negative impacts, including starting wildfires. The new framework is meant to allow muirburn to continue, but with more oversight so that the negative impacts are avoided.

We hope this further delay will provide ample opportunity for the Scottish Government to put in place the proper training for practitioners on the ground, as well as better communicate to land managers how the licencing system will operate in advance of its full implementation ahead of the Autumn 2026 season.
