We've probably learned more about American politics from the ANES than any other single data source. The same is true for the GSS and sociology. Both of these are gone if Congress acquiesces to these NSF cuts.

STEM fields are of course important. And, think of how impactful your favorite books, music, and interactions have on you as a person. We need more empathy, self reflection, and critical thinking about what it means to be human in this world. Let’s not delegitimize its importance.

These past two years, I’ve heard a lot of STEM folks be upset about the lack of funding and grants—many saying it’s “the death of U.S. science.” And in the same breath disparage social sciences, arts, and other humanistic pursuits. We need to study and fund lit., arts, music, and politics.

Curious if there’s any academic research or otherwise on the science of sharing? I’ve noticed that sharing can be a powerful method of connection or disconnection depending on how it’s done.

Any source who ever plans to talk to USA Today needs to know about this and assess whether it's worth the gamble. I've never heard of this for any publication I've worked with, but add it to the pile of unethical and dangerous practices to look out for in contracts.

Today I’m nostalgic for Utah mountains, the memories and friends of college, and my family. I’d love nothing more than some fry sauce and some quality time back home with my loved ones and to reminisce. 💜

Extremely difficult to overstate how boned the United States is if foreign scientists like this man start viewing China as a more attractive place to work. Like that's it, that's the entire ballgame. Figure out how to leave the country and get your money out of dollars.

The world is cynical enough. Let people believe in their dreams. Of course be honest, but there’s a fine line between being honest and cynicism that indulges your experience.

New pet peeve: don’t give vague reasons why someone shouldn’t pursue a PhD and be super negative about it. Especially if they’re excited. For most, you should be able to express your negative experiences and discuss some of the realities and costs in a constructive manner.

Just got back some fun polling data from a nationally representative sample that political scientists get to ask a single question on whatever they want. My question: why did someone include a question about perceptions regarding the public’s favorite flavor of ice cream? Most thought vanilla.

The social science division of NSF is looking at zero funding from the admin. For the physical scientists, who have faced immense cuts, it’s clear who is next. Our social science work can assist in trying to address the widespread concerns that led to all these funding cuts. Offer support!

In my U.S. Presidency class, young students noted that Trump is the president they remember for most of their lives. Many students said the class was grounding and a reminder that what we are seeng isn’t normal. The new chaos of U.S. politics isn’t normal, and this is why we need poli sci classes.

It seems clear to me that the standards for many entry level tenure track jobs in academia appear to be the previous standard for tenure. Now visiting positions and postdocs gear you up to be at that level to compete. I hope folks can see how this pushes out underrepresented folks in academia.

hey chat, does effective communication include passive-aggressively leaving a book calling your colleagues idiots lying around in a shared office space?
A coffee table with a single item on it: a book called "Surrounded By Idiots" by Thomas Erikson, which is supposedly about effective communication with "the four types of human behavior" and has "over two million copies sold"

Every time ICE kills someone, let it be a reminder that they do not have the power to govern the way they want. Violence is the weakest and most unstable source of power. If the state is relying on violence, it’s a sign they can’t get power any other way.
