I'm increasingly frustrated that people who are anti-AI aren't being taken seriously, and taking a page out of my thoughts on why the anti-trans backlash got as far as it did I'm starting to think the anti-AI side isn't extreme enough.

Donald Trump is not himself the disease of our politics. He’s just the worst symptom. The disease is the system that allows corporations to buy and sell politicians so they can rig it against the rest of us. Money out of politics. Money in your pocket. Medicare for All.

I wrote about who is actually making America “poorer and dirtier.” It’s not immigrants. (Gift link) www.theatlantic.com/ideas/2026/0...
Who is responsible for this terrible state of affairs? The opposition party and immigrants, apparently. Vance went on to say, “The Democrat legacy of the last few years was that they bankrupted our country and left us poor. They left our country weaker. They left our border wide open and our communities less safe.”

But this account represents a preposterous inversion. Almost every problem Vance lists, the Trump administration has made worse.

The administration’s environmental policies have made American water and air dirtier. Its health-care, tariff, and tax policies have worsened inflation and increased the financial burden on most American households, even as incomes have grown. And its public-health policies have led to outbreaks of contagious disease.

Despite the whining about “ historical accuracy,” the racist backlash to the casting in Nolan’s Odyssey is about the right wanting to justify racial hierarchy by projecting it into a past where it did not actually exist. www.theatlantic.com/ideas/2026/0...
When some on the right speak of reverence for “civilization,” what they’re doing is trying to anachronistically justify the hierarchy of race they would like to see enacted today by rooting it in antiquity. You cannot cast Black people in The Odyssey, because The Odyssey is a pillar of “Western civilization,” which they consider to be white. This faction of the far right imagines antiquity as a kind of idyllic Jim Crow universe of utterly separate civilizations, one in which the integration they despise could not possibly exist. But Greece is not as far from Africa as the North American continent is, and the modern construct of race, a pseudoscientific product of the Atlantic slave trade, would not be invented until thousands of years after Homer. Black people are depicted in Greek art. Egypt, Libya, and “Aethiopia” are frequently referenced in ancient writings. As the Black classics scholar Frank Snowden Jr. wrote in the 1970s, at least one of the characters in The Odyssey, Eurybates, is specifically described as “black-skinned and woolly-haired.” As the Stanford classics professor Sarah Derbew notes in her book Untangling Blackness in Greek Antiquity, Black people are referenced in plays by Euripides, Sophocles, and Aeschylus. They also appear in the writings of Hesiod and Herodotus. One of the lost epic poems is The Aethiopis, in which Memnon, the Aethiopian king and an ally to Troy, plays a major role.

I published a book on American democracy almost a year ago now. This is the conclusion.
Thomas Paine, a man who did nearly as much to write Amer-
ica into existence as Thomas Jefferson, shared his disdain for per-
petual constitutions. “There never did, there never will, and there
never can, exist a Parliament, or any description of men, or any
generation of men, in any country, possessed of the right or the
power of binding and controlling posterity to the ‘end of time,’
or of commanding forever how the world shall be governed, or
who shall govern it,” wrote Paine in Rights of Man. “Every age
and generation must be as free to act for itself in all cases as the
age and generations which preceded it.”
And even as they defended a Constitution that they hoped
would endure for some time, the Founders appealed to our rightand capacity to reason new institutions into existence. “It seems
to have been reserved to the people of this country,” Hamilton
wrote in Federalist 1, “to decide the important question, whether
societies of men are really capable or not of establishing good
government from reflection and choice, or whether they are for-
ever destined to depend for their political constitutions on acci-
dent and force.”
The years since have given us much to reflect upon. We
have more than two centuries of experience with the Founders’
Constitution. We’ve seen governments across the world rise and
fall, peer Constitutions drafted, amended, and replaced. Political
science—a field that was still new in the Founders’ day—has de-
veloped to maturity; regularly, it tackles questions that vexed
them with tools they did not have and a rigor they were not ca-
pable of. Human equality, a principle they gestured at but were
unwilling to accept and act upon themselves, has come to under-
pin our society. So too, despite everything their institutions have
done to undermine it, has a faith in democracy that the Founders
never shared. We know more than the Founders did. We are more
practiced at governance. We are more moral, more just. What
privileges their intentions for this country over our own?
“The earth,” Jefferson wrote, “belongs to the living and not to
the dead.” As so many have labored to remind us over the last
decade, the United States has much to atone for, the sins of Jef-
ferson among them. But his words here—an intuition that can be
read in the Declaration of Independence and the act of the Found-
ing itself—are unassailable. Our present is shaped by all America
has done and all America has been, yes. But our future will be
shaped in large part by our own aspirations—what we decide this
country can and must be. America is ours. Not Jefferson’s. Not
Washington’s. Not Hamilton’s. Not Madison’s. Ours. Our iden-
tity is ours to establish and define.mocracy and its possibilities to collapse. “Giving the world back
to its inhabitants is too big a job for the merely practical,” the
director Orson Welles once said. “Only the devout deserve the
trust of government, for only the devout can face the unimagi-
nable vistas of man’s destiny.” A characteristically grand state-
ment, yes. But as Welles understood, this is a country that runs on
grand visions. The cultivation of them is a core political compe-
tency. And the absence of them is an opportunity—not just for
those who’d like to pull America forward, unfortunately, but
for those who’d like to set America back. It should be plain by
now that defending ourselves from the depredations of men like
the president—those who would trade our future away for per-
sonal profit and the indulgence of their prejudices—will take
more than the defense of American institutions as we’ve known
them. The American project will be saved only by a return to the
spirit that first inspired it. Each day, the darkness that shrouds
this republic as I write these words makes new claims on our free-
doms and our livelihoods. But we have known darkness—we
have seen it thicker, deeper, and more suffocating than the pall
over us now. Through it all, these words set down by Paine in
Common Sense more than two centuries ago—his benediction
for this country—have remained true: “We have it in our power
to begin the world over again.”
