Sine and Cosine for signal processing in statistics is so powerful that trigonometry would probably be kept in the curriculum. But I agree that stats might be the most intuitive way to teach complex quantitative material with a concrete and relevant material.

For this reason I think the on ramp to Math/Stats should start from the humanities. Like learn to read and understand the manual first before you start operating heavy machinery.

A deep asymmetry between STEM and non-STEM (at the undergraduate level) is that in STEM, the amount of work and effort to be passable is quite high, while in the humanities it is as difficult if not more difficult to be brilliant, with very little needed to be passable.

Trigonometry once again proves its relevance in another late night study of complex systems where sophisticated methods of playing with shapes is the only viable option for ascertaining order.

I got a dumb question: When I saw this I thought of the urban legend that chem professors catch their students cheating by checking for a bi-modal distribution in the exam scores. So, if there’s a a bi-modal distribution of IQ for men, would that suggest cheating or manipulation?

There's a mean between hyping AI as something that changes everything and seeing it as a dystopian horrorscape. It's a tool - it has capabilities and limitations. It's not a panacea and it's dumb to think that it's all upside or downside.

Cheap Money. This is what quitting an addiction cold turkey looks like. It sucks, it's awful, you feel that you won't survive(not unwarranted because you might die without supervision). We've been talking about this for a decade, maybe it'll shock us into sobriety.

To bring this home: what we call AI was not meant to arbitrate human values before executing each process, it isn’t human or sentient. It’s a powerful machine running wild because humanity has not had time to decide for which task is this tool best used and how to best use it.

Hammers are incredibly useful tools but the first ones of millennia-past were not nearly as durable or strong or reliable as the ones we purchase today. And that is the case because humanity decided it was a tool worth improving based on prior experience with it. Not theoretical or abstract value.

Count of Monte Carlo @jamaljulien.bsky.social · 03/01/2025
To put it very crudely: AI is a collection of linear algebra equations strung together in software and tacked on to some computer hardware for memory, access to this Frankenstein is made available via API. It’s a data processing tool of bits and bolts that is as powerful as it is unreliable.

It is not more useful. Anthropology is more useful for understanding ethical issues in AI governance.

Capitalism AND all other economic models (Mercantilism, Serfdom, Communism, Socialism, etc.) are unable to self-regulate ethical outcomes. I’d even go so far as to say political systems are also ineffectual. Culture, how we relate to each other, is far more important than any regulatory framework.

Economics is useful but it does not protect human life because it considers the value of human life for production not the productive value for human existence. It’s entirely incapable of prioritizing humanities’ interests, morals, or ethics; and it was never intended for those considerations. 4/4

“complex systems” effects are not easily attributable to other complex systems, though they may persist concurrently with the prevailing system. 3/4

My point is twofold: you’re missing the trees for the forest and that mercantilism is the culprit that incentivized transatlantic slave trade. Large parts of today’s slave trading have a distinct pattern of enslaving peoples for another nation’s benefit (Libya, Mauritania, Saudi Arabia). 2/4

Count of Monte Carlo @jamaljulien.bsky.social · 01/01/2025
That’s just it, none of this is as simple as you’ve laid out. Mercantilist structures facilitated capitalistic enterprise as much as the Ford Model-T production line facilitated the mass production of the Ford Mustang. But these are 2 eras of a manufacturing giant so *how*? 1/4

On the importance of history. The coup d’æil (or professional judgment) is the ability to tell instances apart. It’s the ability to recognise patterns. It is also a trained ability that requires a repertoire of historical cases. Theory is not enough. #PME #polsky #civmilsky

Be specific. When did mercantilism end? When did capitalism arise? When did empires discontinue the transatlantic slave trade? Dates matter when we’re talking about history. Also, mercantilism and capitalism have different aims (national prosperity vs individual profit).

Count of Monte Carlo @jamaljulien.bsky.social · 01/01/2025
Few quick thoughts: Transatlantic slave trade pre-dates capitalism. Economics is always a values based argument. Industrial Engineers study complex systems far better and in greater detail than economists because “complexity” isn’t treated as an abstraction of human values.

What's the reading-ease score of NATO #doctrine? AJP-01 (ch1) sits around 25, rendering it "very difficult to read, best understood by university graduates." When most NATO members don't have English as their first language, hard-to-read doctrine (and operational orders!) is a real problem.
