I care less about Signal chats and more about the blacksite offshore concentration camps we're sending random people to without any semblance of a trial, so I'll be interested to see if the national media can rub their bellies and pat their heads at the same time this week. Historically they can't.

Our house was vandalized last night. I’m sure it was teenagers pulling a “prank.” But ours is the only house in the neighborhood with a pride flag 🏳️‍🌈 and it was the only house toilet papered. Could it have been worse? Yes. Am I glad it wasn’t worse? Yes. Am I going to take down our flag? Fuck no.

Look, we tried to warn people. At this point, the only way out is through. Trump will precipitate a collapse and only then can we rebuild towards a better future. Our goal is to minimize the number of people we lose along the way. Build community, help others. Resilience is all we have.

Stop letting unfunny men tell you there’s something wrong with you for not getting their “jokes”. Stop fake laughing. Let their reality reflect the truth of how fundamentally they misunderstand humor. Neuter their ability to use “it was a joke” for emotional cover. Make them see nobody laugh.

If you’re in an institution doing any kind of DEI work, the most important thing to do right now is simply call it something else. Change it to “Community Outreach” & then keep on doing the same important work. When they outlaw Community Outreach rebrand it as “Strategic Partnerships,” rinse/repeat.

I'm amazed this has to be said, but IT IS ABSOLUTELY FINE AND GOOD for people to have outlets and interests that can give them joy at times of immeasurable existential crisis, and demanding that they don't and instead fall into irremediable and permanent despair is doing the fascists' work for them.

2025 is starting off with a sucker punch. My great aunt passed away yesterday. I’m having trouble putting into words how special she was to me. I had to get out of the house, so I spent the afternoon seeking solace in nature, among the ancient mountains and eternal stream.

Carter used the power of his post presidency to nearly eradicate guinea worm. There were 3.5 million cases when the Carter Center’s work began in 1986. He said in 2015 that he wanted to see “guinea worm completely eradicated before I die.” There’ve been 7 cases this year. www.npr.org/sections/goa...

Jimmy Carter took on the awful Guinea worm when no one else would — and he triumphed
Carter targeted diseases primarily affecting the poor in remote areas — notably "Guinea worm disease." Because of his commitment, case numbers plummeted from 3.6 million a year to just 13 in 2022.

My regular suggestion: At the end of the semester why not reach out to someone whose work you taught and let them know? These days we have very little idea who teaches our stuff and in what contexts. It takes almost no time and can really make their day.

A lot of academics (myself included) are activists. Studying something horrible (you know, like climate change or gender inequality) and wanting to make it less horrible doesn’t mean your work is compromised — it just means you give a shit. Empathy is a key scholarly skill. IMHO.

You will do readings where no one shows up. You will set up at events and sell no books. Rejection will show up in your inbox again and again. You will say “I wrote a book!” and folks will stay quiet or say “Cool!” and then not buy it. It’s all good. Part of the gig. KEEP AT IT.

Ever wondered why walking around museums is weirdly tiring? At normal speed our legs act like pendulums, swinging forward from the hip & saving us a huge amount of energy. In "museum shuffle" our muscles must do ALL the work of constant readjustment. So cake in the cafe is scientifically justified 🥳

Another autographed copy of PINK TRIANGLE LEGACIES is heading to the post office on the way to its new home….this time in Kansas. And my Clark Grizwald doll has blessed it.
A purple bubble mailing envelope sits in front of a book with the title “Pink Triangle Legacies: coming out in the shadow of the Holocaust.” Next to the book is a small doll of the character Clark Griswald from the movie “Christmas Vacation”

Sarah Schulman: "Visibility was a construct that the gay movement invented to explain and excuse the cruelty we experienced...We invented the idea it was an inadvertent consequence of a lack of information. 'If they would discover how we truly are, they would not want to hurt us.'"
Now, many natural and unavoidable mistakes have been made as the gay liberation movement tried to first grasp, then understand, and then convey the system of cruelty by heterosexuals toward homosexuals. The nature of this cruelty is hard to initially conceptualize because it is simultaneously pervasive, invisible, and deeply painful. The people who are doing it often don't know that they are doing it or pretend that they do not. The repetition and the dailiness make it seem normal. It is very difficult to try to imagine a life without this constant diminishment. And the depths ofits consequences coupled with its total lack ofjustification are alienating to fully realize. The reinscription of these cruelties within our own trusting, loving relationships is difficult to articulate, because there is no place to do so. When review- ing our errors of understatement, they seem innocent, childlike. How sad that so many of our oversimplifications were caused by our love and trust of other human beings, and our consequent inability to understand how they could be so ruthless in exploiting their advantages over us. All of this converges on the question of visibilityl Visibility was a construct that the gay and lesbian movement invented to explain and excuse the cruelty we were experiencing. We denied that it was intentional. Instead, we invented the idea that it was an inadvertent consequence of heterosexuals having a lack of information about what we are really like. "If they would discover how We truly are, they would not want to hurt uS. And since they were doing everything imaginable, using every social institution to make it impossi- ble for us to be truly seen, We would have to subject ourselves to extreme
