I don't know which was first, but Ghostbusters (Library Ghost) and Indiana Jones: Last Crusade (the skeleton Nazi at the end) both terrified me as a kid, something about skeletonization just creeped me way out.

“Be sure and tell ‘em ‘Large Marge sent ya!’” The jump scare gave me nightmares. Also, I was already scared of riding in cars and the possibility of traffic accidents. Pretty intense for an otherwise benign movie.

While playing Cyberpunk 2077, I managed to loot the Foxhound from an airdrop. Anyone who actually knows how weirdly rare the designers made this thing might understand why I feel compelled to use it for the rest of the game.

GOP ads right now are all about attacking trans people. Over, and over, and over. I was a gay teen in 2004 watching the Bush campaign try to win on attacking gay marriage, but the resort to this hate drive in campaign ads feels so dialed up now. I can’t imagine being an lgbt kid watching tv today.

Angelique was the first dating sim I ever played, and I was already hooked. Next came a game based on a shōjo romance anime whose name eludes me, then finally I stumbled upon Tokimeki. None of these were in English (nor are they still, officially, as far as I know).

I think of the recent attempts to use the term “birthing person” in clinical settings. It’s super awkward, but being inclusive is the right thing to do. English doesn’t offer many easy options, but I’d like to think someone will come up with something better soon. That or we’ll just get used to it.

Of course. But that applies to deliberate attempts to shift language in general. It’s almost always awkward, and unless important institutions or large swaths if the population adopt and maintain such usages, they rarely stick. In fact, most first efforts get replaced with something else eventually.

Yeah, every native Spanish speaker I knew back when ‘latinx’ was gaining momentum pronounced it ‘latine’ all along, so I’ve always wondered if that was a language-barrier misconception when people started pronouncing the X like an English X.

And while I know “you guys” used to be particularly predominant in some parts of the U.S., it’s basically used everywhere now. I think the only people who get caught in the weeds about it are gender and language nerds (myself included) or people who have sensitivities about being misgendered.
