Grim Monday with racist blackshirts on the streets of the UK and winning in one German state. Governments are struggling with the modern world - particularly in UK, France, and Germany. But I'm afraid we're all part of a story of frustrated expectations.

There was a very active critic of the history syllabus in the 90s. Very wise people scoffed at how much time kids were forced to spend learning about the Nazis and democratic decay in the 30s. Turns out we should have gone much harder.

I'm running for LBJ's Senate seat. Like me, Lyndon Johnson was a Texas teacher. In office, he made the largest federal investment in America’s students this country has ever seen. When we win back LBJ’s seat, we can pass an LBJ-sized investment in America’s public schools.

Changing parliamentary procedure: a guide for MPs
House of Commons procedure is a key factor in how parliament works. But, at times, it can be a source of frustration and can appear difficult to change. Nonetheless, history shows that procedural reform is possible – and backbench MPs have often been vital to bringing it about. A new Unit report, published today, assesses how change comes about, analysing successful past campaigns to identify lessons for would-be reformers in this parliament. In this post the report’s authors – Meg Russell, Lisa James and Hannah Kelly – discuss some key conclusions.

The revolving-door premiership
Manoeuvres to replace a Prime Minister are yet again afoot. In his first blogpost as the Constitution Unit’s new Director, Alan Renwick examines the increasing volatility at the top of British politics. Changes in the occupant of Number 10 between elections are normal. But current methods for filling vacancies are inadequate. And rapid turnover is a symptom of deeper troubles. Addressing those troubles will require fundamental shifts in our political culture.
