I think it is very telling that efforts to introduce them outside America have always failed miserably, in part because “an excuse to get drunk but it involves a weird initiation ceremony and a big fee” is beyond any European conception. Even beyond those weird German fencing clubs.

I do love that list because it's a great example of people who were literary megastars and who now are basically unknown. Unless you're a nerd or knows he did the screenplay for King Kong, who has heard of Edgar Wallace these days (which is a shame, they hold up brilliantly).
