The contrast between the utterly sycophantic coverage this week of Kemi Badenoch, whose party has a truly atrocious electoral record under her leadership, and the utterly dismissive coverage of the Greens, tells you everything you need to know about media bias in the UK

the republicans are wide open on several fronts, historically unpopular president, unpopular war, record high gas. any dem throwing trans people under the bus at this moment is doing it because they want to. not like they need to, do they. even if it worked as a vote winner, which it doesn't

I don't know if Dolly Parton was the greatest songwriter of all time but I do know that Dolly Parton writing "Jolene" and "I Will Always Love You" on the same day is the greatest day any songwriter has ever had.

Obvs none of this discounts the possibility of new "speed cameras" being rolled out which don't just record speeding and are really mass surveillance devices. But, in that case, calling them "speed cameras" would be a lie to deceive the public (which is entirely plausible)

jack @jackmlr.bsky.social · 18/08/2026
Provided all of the above is accurate... not such a big deal, right? Of course, the police separately have access to massive networks of CCTV & licence plate recognition cameras used for mass surveillance. So, speed cameras are pretty irrelevant in this context
130
jack @jackmlr.bsky.social · 18/08/2026
Likely irrelevant but speed cameras in my country only store images when a car passes above the speed limit. These cameras are operated by the local authority / highway agency rather than the police. Only when a car is caught speeding is data sent onto the police for a ticket to be issued.

The most telling results here is the noticeably higher "Neither" answer for the Greens. A whole chunk of people who understand perfectly well the Greens stand for common people against the establishment, but refuse to admit it.

For many LGBT folk like me, and especially trans folk, Keir Starmer will be remembered in the same way as Margaret Thatcher: with deep contempt for having overseen a deeply hostile, queerphobic government, which rolled back human rights and set society back by at least a decade. Good riddance.

This Guardian headline is like saying an Olympic runner has had a great start to the 400 metres race by setting off at 100m pace...
"The initial match selections have been the key to ITV'S success in the opening week. BBC gambled in pre-tournament negotiations with ITV by opting to have more first-pick games in the knockout stages. It will have the first choice of fixtures in the last 32, last 16 and semi-finals, as well as England's second group game against Ghana on Tuesday."

Owen's point is clearly that those actively inciting this violence may form the next government, which will only make these scenes worse, more frequent, and more widespread. That doesn't preclude blaming Starmer for pandering to the far-right and failing to act in the face of this pogrom.
