This Guardian headline is like saying an Olympic runner has had a great start to the 400 metres race by setting off at 100m pace...
"The initial match selections have been the key to ITV'S success in the opening week. BBC gambled in pre-tournament negotiations with ITV by opting to have more first-pick games in the knockout stages. It will have the first choice of fixtures in the last 32, last 16 and semi-finals, as well as England's second group game against Ghana on Tuesday."

As if the presenter of ITV's world cup coverage just announced that "Sweden manager Gareth Southgate" wore a cowboy hat to training in Texas as they cut to footage of Graham Potter...
Sweden manager Graham Potter wearing a cowboy hat to training in Texas (he is not Gareth Southgate)

Btw here's what Spencer actually wrote in her piece. Not sure I'd describe it as "breathtakingly arrogant"...
"Too many people I speak to say the same thing they know they're never far away from things unravelling even further. The washing machine breaks, they get a parking ticket, or their hours get cut at work, and the whole house of cards collapses. There's nothing left to cut back on to make the budget add up. Luxuries" were cut out a long time ago.

I don't think that's something most MPs understand - not really. They might think they do, they might say they do, but they don't properly know what it's like; how it feels in your bones."

Gutter tabloid journalism from BBC News. Mentioning synagogues in a story about planned crackdown on "repeat demonstrations". Implies anti-genocide protests are targeting Jewish sites. This isn't happening!
Senior officers will be able to consider the "cumulative impact" of previous protests, the Home Office said, which could mean they instruct organisers to hold events elsewhere if a site has seen repeated demonstrations.

Anyone who breaches these conditions will risk arrest and prosecution, it said.

Following Thursday's deadly attack at a synagogue in Manchester all police forces in England and Wales are offering additional support to the 538 synagogues and Jewish community sites across the country.

The new powers will be "brought forward as soon as possible", the Home Office said.

I've been consistently impressed by Zack for over a year now. This morning I joined the Green Party. Then, this afternoon, I listened to his full PoliticsJOE interview with my partner - both of us nodding in agreement & shouting "YES!" throughout. [1/2]
Green Party welcome email:

"Thank you for joining the Green Party. We believe in doing politics differently, and we couldn't do it without you.

Over the next few days, we'll be sending you a few emails about the Green Party, including what events are coming up in the near future, campaigns you can join, and getting in touch with your local party."

Wow, Day of the Jackal just keeps getting better & better. This week's episode was crazy!
The Jackal (Eddie Redmayne) uses a silenced pistol to take down his target in the streets of New York (I think!?)

As an early Captain Tom Foundation sceptic, I enjoyed the discussion on @mrjamesob.bsky.social's show this morning. I must highlight this MoS interview with Hannah Ingram-Moore from Feb 2022 when she 'said the quiet part out loud'. Reading this at the time cemented all my prior suspicions...
What was the best year of your financial life?

It was 2020. On a personal level, raising that money was lifechanging. It all started on that second weekend of lockdown when we were coming to terms with the fact that the country was closing down.

My husband and I sat outside, genuinely worried about our financial future. The entire pipeline for our business over the next 18 months had been wiped clean overnight. We were worried about how we would sustain our workers, my father and the children.

It was then that my father, who had been rehabilitating after breaking his hip, started walking again.

We'd had to cancel his 100th birthday party because of Covid. So my husband suggested that instead of the party my father should walk around the garden 100 times, and we would give him £1 a lap.

My father said: 'All right, seems like a fair challenge.'
