didn't, I didn't.... [E]ven a small chance.... Even a small, tiny chance. Smallest,
tiniest chances.... Do whatever you can to clear your name. You can get out of this.

government's own recording. When the agents returned, Mr. Cole reported "a giant pain in my stomach." The response: "I know. Are you ready? Are you ready to
explain?" (Tr. at 87.)
Minutes later, the agents asked whether he wanted the interrogation to end.
His answer revealed a mind that had stopped functioning: "I don't know what to do
anymore. I just-everything is just, everything is just blank. Being told, being told all of this, it's just a little too much to process. I'm sorry." (Tr. at 91.) Rather than honor that answer, the agents pressed on. They cued a surveillance video and asked Mr. Cole to identify the man in it. He denied any familiarity with what he saw—
