University leaders need to understand: they are holding INCREDIBLY good cards. It is so rare in today's polarized era to have the support of 70+ percent of the public against the Trump admiministration on anything. Universities have that—AND winning legal arguments.
Graphic of Washington Post poll from April 18-22, 2025, showing "Majorities of Americans oppose various Trump proposals"

highlighting two lines in particular:
"Increasing the Federal Government's role in how private universities operate" - 28 percent support, 70 percent oppose
"Reducing federal funding for medical research" - 21 percent support, 77 percent oppose

University presidents, the time is now! Unshackle the general counsel's office! File all the lawsuits! Release the faculty upon the op-ed sections! Write to your alumni, parents, and donors! You have nothing to lose but a tiny percentage of your enormous endowments... www.nytimes.com/2025/04/08/u...

HEY DORKS! I did some math. WE can be the difference. Erica Chenoweth’s work suggests that when 3.5% of a public are mobilized in one non-violent action, the movement is almost always successful. How does this apply right now? Follow me 1/x www.hks.harvard.edu/centers/carr...

Multiple LGBTQ+ NIH grants terminated over the weekend. This is terrifying for those of us who do federally funded LGBTQ+ research-I know I lost a lot of sleep this weekend. Very grateful that @britshmit.bsky.social was also awake at 3am on saturday to DM about it. open.substack.com/pub/insideme...

I’m old enough to remember the catastrophic toll of HIV/AIDS denial by South African President Thabo Mbeki, which led to >300,000 AIDS deaths. I never thought that 20 years later, an HIV/AIDS denialist would be tapped for the helm of health policy in the US. RFK Jr MUST be rejected #WorldAIDSDay
