Let me be clear: we know from evidence in countries around the world that physician dual practice drains resources away from the public system and, in many cases, increases wait times for public patients. This goes directly against the spirit of the Canada Health Act. 1/3

I hand out respirator/breatheteq masks to my patients to help them reduce their risk of getting COVID and Long COVID. Here's the letter I've put together about this for parents about children masking. @longcovidresource.bsky.social @longcovidadvoc.com @longcovidkids.bsky.social #longcovid
Letter with different typeface colours entitled, "Preventing Long COVID in Children". Text as follows:

As described by the Public Health Agency of Canada1,
Long COVID (also known as post-COVID-19 condition) affects children as well as adults.
- It’s long-lasting symptoms after a known or unknown COVID infection.
- The most common Long COVID symptoms in children are:
Fatigue
Headache
Abdominal pain
Sleep problems
Shortness of breath
Cognitive problems (difficulty thinking or concentrating)
Muscle aches and joint pains

I care for children with Long COVID. It can interfere with their social, physical and educational development. You do not want your child to develop Long COVID.

While there are some promising therapies, there is no clear cure for Long COVID.

The best way to prevent Long COVID is to prevent COVID infections.
Since COVID is airborne, the best way to prevent COVID infections is to wear respirator-type masks (like N95s) all the time indoors. This is why I’m giving you this mask for your child to wear. I personally purchased these to hand out to my patients. This is how important it is to me, as your child’s doctor, for your child to mask: to protect their health.

I know there will be times at school and other places where your child will want to remove their mask. Wearing a mask as much as possible in public indoor spaces will greatly reduce your child’s risk of getting COVID, which will reduce their risk of developing Long COVID. If they wear it 90% of the time, that’s still a huge win and way better than wearing it only 20% of the time, or not at all.

> Key tip: shape the curve of the nose piece first, then put the mask on.

1 Post COVID-19 condition (long COVID): Symptoms and treatment. Public Health Agency of Canada. 8 January 2026. Accessed online at https://www.canada.ca/en/public-health/services/diseases/2019-novel-coronavirus-infection/symptoms/post-covid-19-condition.html

"I have served the public as a Public Health Inspector for over 9 years. Together, we have made it through numerous staff turnovers, wildfires, emergency evacuations, boil water orders, housing crises, infestations, and outbreaks.

It has been an absolute privilege to keep not just Albertans safe, but you-my neighbors and friends. It is your fundamental right to enjoy an outing at a restaurant, go for a swim, or drink a glass of tap water without the worry of getting sick or poisoned. But this is all about to change.

In just six days, on June 17, 2026, the Government of Alberta is dissolving Public Health Inspectors and implementing mass layoffs across the province. We are being forced to choose between signing a severance agreement that bans us from working within the province, or accepting a Government of Alberta position with severe cuts to benefits, pay, seniority, and positions.

Legislation was silently passed to violate our contracts and force us into roles that will no longer effectively serve our communities. While a transition was expected, Public Health Inspectors are uniquely the only professional body targeted in this manner by the government.

This incredibly short notice was entirely by design to prevent public pushback.

Our Provinces's health is at stake. Please, stand with us and write or call your MLA immediately to demand they advocate for a fair and amicable transition that protects public health and the inspectors who keep Alberta safe."

As you continue hearing about the new COVID-19 variant (the “cicada” variant) in the news, remember the protection remains the same! Wear the best mask available to you, keep indoor air clean, & stay up to date on vaccines to protect yourself & others from infection & serious illness from COVID-19!
New COVID-19 variant.
Same protection. Wear masks. High-quality masks like N95 and KN95s (these are also called respirators) offer the most protection. Use the best available to you! Keep clean air. COVID-19 infects others most commonly when it is breathed in through the air. Keeping clean, well-ventilated air with open windows and air purifiers lowers the amount of virus in the air and reduces your chances of getting sick! Get vaccinated. Even when new variants develop, vaccines can help protect you from serious illness and death from COVID-19!
