How very wonderful it is to live alongside a cat. Classics & English | Asian-British. I like to read, among other things many and divers. Special love for Classical reception in the form of shitposting. Contemplating starting a new life in Berlin.

De Lagny died on 11 April 1734. While he was dying, someone asked him: "What is the square of 12?" and he answered immediately: "144."

It's not exactly peace in our time but it does count as a truce in our early afternoon. #Caturday
Two cats resting on a bed. The grey tabby cat in the back is leaning against a soft grey pillow. The black cat in the front is tangled in a small blanket. A bookcase can be glimpsed in the back, proving that these aren't just beautiful but also well educated cats. The key point here, though, is that the cats are not trying to eat each other which is a huge paw forward.

Year of the Red Fire Horse. I’m reminded of a poem by Jeongrye Choi about a legendary warrior who cuts off the head of the horse that always carried him to his lover’s house, believing this act will allow him to fulfill his destiny. The poem, however, takes a different view.

#MerryChristmas to those who celebrate...here's a c. 1880 Christmas card with a mouse riding a lobster, holding a note that reads "Paix, Joie, Santé, Bonheur" ("Peace, Joy, Health, Happiness"). Victorian era Christmas cards were weird. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
Color digital photo of a Victorian Christmas card, c. 1880, featuring a grey mouse riding a red lobster, holding one of the lobster's pairs of antennae as reins in its left hand, and a white piece of paper in its right hand with the French words "Paix, Joie, Santé, Bonheur" ("Peace, Joy, Health, Happiness") written in black ink. (There are many examples of Christmas cards from this era featuring strange animal imagery, often comical and/or macabre...honestly this isn't even the weirdest one out there LOL)

A small hedgehog has green and red circles on her spikes and a gold one. On the branch in front of and behind her are 2 more gold balls. The branch has a few green leaves. It all looks very festive although the balls on her spikes are probably grapes.

www.nybooks.com/articles/202... i'm trying to read this essay but i keep getting stuck on that bill's name
The language of these policies usually distinguishes men from women by their reproductive capacity, which is assumed to be determined at birth or even at conception. Each statute mandates that its definitions of "sex," "female," and "male" be used whenever those words appear in any part of the state code. Some purport to be establishing a "women's bill of rights," as the titles of Kansas's and Oklahoma's bills suggest; Louisiana's is titled "The Women's Safety and Protection Act." (On the other hand, the name of North Dakota's bill—into which legislators slipped another term they wanted to define-captures the arbitrariness involved: "The Definition of Female, Male, Sex, and Scrap Metal Dealer.")

Exquisite Roman glass cup signed by master glassmaker ‘Ennion’. AD 30-70. Ennion was the first glassmaker to ‘brand’ his work by incorporating his name into the mould’s design, some 2000 years ago! Museo Archeologico Nazionale di Adria 📷 Leonardo.disimone #Archaeology
Photo of an intact Roman two-handled translucent cobalt blue glass cup dated AD 30-70. The cup has a cylindrical body with vertical sides and two narrow strap handles attached to each side as ear-shaped loops. The cup is mould-blown with relief decoration on the body which incorporates two inscriptions in Greek, one on each side of the cup. One side reads ‘ENNIWN/ENOIH/CEN’ (‘Ennion made [it]'). The other side reads ‘MNHOH/O AOPA/ZNW translated as ‘May the buyer be remembered’.

Dimensions: Height 2½ in. (6.4 cm), diameter (rim): 3% in. (9.5 cm)
Collection Museo Archeologico Nazionale di Adria, Italy.

Incredibly this is one of two matching cups blown from the same mould, found together in a Roman tomb at Cuora, near Adria, Italy, in the early 1900s. The matching cup is now part of the collections at the Corning Museum of Glass
