Very sad to hear that Margaret Hamilton has passed away. Here's a short thread about her role in the Apollo mission, and her lesser-known work on the simulations that led to the discovery of Chaos Theory. 🧪 👩‍🔬 ⚛️

Paz-Soldan argues that the scientific fundamentals of fusion have largely been solved, but the remaining hurdles are engineering challenges that require sustained, coordinated federal investment. A new kind of Manhattan Project is needed, he says. Read the fulll opinion: bit.ly/4fylWyb

Posted on LinkedIn by @globalecoguy.bsky.social: Actual versus projected buildout for solar power vs. carbon capture
Two-panel chart comparing actual performance versus modeled projections for two climate technologies, spanning 2010–2040.

Panel 1 — Carbon Capture Capacity (megatons)
Line chart. Y-axis: 0 to 4,000+ megatons. A single dark red line (actual carbon storage) runs nearly flat from 2010 to approximately 2025, remaining well below 500 megatons. Beginning around 2023–2025, a fan of teal/blue projection lines diverges sharply upward, with the highest trajectories reaching approximately 4,000–5,000 megatons by 2040 and the lowest remaining near 500 megatons. Actual performance is far below all but the most conservative projections.

Panel 2 — Solar Power (terawatt-hours)
Line chart. Y-axis: 0 to 2,000+ terawatt-hours. A single dark red line (actual solar electricity production) shows exponential growth from near zero in 2010, rising steeply to approximately 2,000 TWh by 2023–2024. A dense fan of teal/blue projection lines originates around 2023–2025 and extends to 2040, spanning a wide range from approximately 200 to 2,000 TWh. Actual solar production meets or exceeds the upper range of nearly all projections.

Implied contrast: Carbon capture has drastically underperformed projections. Solar power has dramatically outperformed them

This might be one of the funniest chart about energy scenarios I’ve seen. You can hardly see “actual” for gas
Winners and Losers
The IEA overestimated gas growth in Asia and underestimated solar

Gas
• Forecast 547 TWh
• Actual 17 TWh

Solar
• Forecast 465 TWh
• Actual 1,333 TWh

Note: Shows expected growth in Asian power generation between 2018 and 2025, based on actual 2018 generation, actual 2025 generation, and the 2018 World Energy Outlook's Current Policies Scenario estimates for 2025. Actual 2025 generation figures are from Ember.

This is the basic problem of all fusion science
Excerpt from a short story: "“It’s got a fusion engine!” Brady exclaimed. The basic concept of a fusion engine was pretty far beyond modern human understanding – but Brady knew how it would work. Step one: you have a fusion reactor that used some method to compress a fusionable material (usually an isotope of hydrogen) so that it underwent the same process that made the sun burn for billions of years. The energy released was then harnessed to, effectively, boil water and shoot it out the back of your spaceship to make it go. The difficulty was A) Step One and B) all the other parts. "
