“It?” asks Buck, but it comes out tremulously. Surely she can’t mean what he thinks she does. Surely he’s thinking too highly of himself, too lowly of her.

“Fostering, adopting. Taking care of Theo.”

“I—” Buck stops himself immediately, and it already feels like he’s given away too much. “You think I could?”

“Nothing definitive,” she says. “I’m not sure— I know you knew his parents, were friends with them. I’m not sure if you knew much about their families? We’re having trouble tracking relatives down.”

Buck nods, swallowing hard. “They didn’t have much in the way of family,” he says, trying not to feel guilty because it’s true. Whether or not it’s what he’d want to say either way, it’s true. “It’s part of why they wanted a kid, they wanted to create a family, you know?” He voice feels tight with it. It’s easier to focus on Theo, on how much he wishes he could swing him up into his arms, to not think about the gnawing loss of his friends. A week ago, he couldn’t have said either way if they were still alive and okay. The not knowing, a burr under his skin that he barely even thought about, a scar that just occasionally twinged when it rained. Something he’d give anything to have back, and yet… And yet he can’t help his own guilt at how glad he was to get to know Theo, before he even knew who he was. The joy that he had found in re-connecting with his friends, in seeing the family they’d built. He’d give it back, of course he would, if it meant they were still out there, unknown but alive. He still feels sick with guilt.
