It's Nobel Prize week! A good time to remember that the economics prize was created by Swedish bankers in 1968 (67 years after the 5 original Nobel prizes) against the wishes of the Nobel family, partly to legitimize neoclassical economics in the public eye and partly to help banks avoid regulation.

Another token of how the "populist" trope, so widely deployed in Western media to denote the far right, has done a lot of rhetorical work in favour of that very far right. It helped downplay the white supremacist, ethno-nationalist, & elitist ideologies at the core of such political formations.

I am wondering why it took a death for people, even on the left, to pay attention to the white supremacist networks at Cambridge & beyond. I have posted about it multiple times, and Byline has run several stories for some years now.

Another way of rephrasing the paradox of tolerance is that we can't have an agreement to disagree if the disagreement is over whether one side is free to continue existing or participating in things like society and civil disagreements without being exiled or discriminated against.

So often what are called “culture wars” are one set of people saying “please can we live without perpetual persecution” and another saying “no, f*** you” but the press considering the latter group have “legitimate concerns” and must be perpetually platformed

For the past two and a half years, the UK government has armed a genocide as it was livestreamed around the world. Now, some politicians are pretending they have always been against the crimes they enabled. Too little, too late. Your complicity will never, ever be forgotten.

Today Colombia can fall back into the hands of the far right, one that is even worse (in every aspect) than what the country has seen in its entire history. The prospect is terrifying.

Starmer and Labour must use AI for their writing. Surely. It’s so bad. Buzzword laden, bland, just sickly gruel. Written by robots for robots. It doesn’t matter who Labour install as new leader. We are going to get the same meaningless dross. It’s like Labour brains are saturated in incompetence.

It's just insane how the Labour leadership keeps explaining their terrible results as a problem of miscommunication. It's not that people's actual lives haven't improved but that Starmer hasn't been effective at "communicating the message".

Labour leadership saying people want ‘change faster’ is yet another manifestation of nanagerial ‘delivery’ mindset. No. What people want is a narrative that indicates an understanding of what has happened to Britain and a willingness to challenge powerful interests to fix it.

I have a hard time believing that people who vote Reform do so because they're sick & tired of austerity & the supposedly failure of neoliberalism to deliver. I think the main driver is racial hatred, which is part of the affective pedagogical repertoire of the elitist & white supremacist UK media.

As the right-winger that he is, Starmer will interpret the results as a sign to move the already-very-much-on-the-right Labour under his leadership further to the right. He might start campaigning on a programme that offers to outnazi the neonazis.
