Watching the sad Society of Authors stushie from a distance, and imagining: what if there were an author with a high profile and a practically unlimited legal budget who'd decided to use their power to help their fellow writers instead of— And that's among the saddest things about it.

The article every writer/translator has been waiting for. I receive sometimes a few scam emails an hour. Sometimes they make me laugh. I love the idea of book clubs 20,000 members strong, or Goodreads literary circles made up of Taylor Swift fans.

I loved it. I was sceptical at first – when there's a huge fuss about a writer I often find that I don't get it – but here I see why people are excited about her. She's incredibly talented!

We couldn't be more delighted to have the renowned @antonialloydjones.bsky.social back on the channel! Here she is reading from Mariusz Szczygieł's GOTTLAND (@lindeneditions.bsky.social, 2026), a 'delightfully unclassifiable' kaleidoscopic portrait of the 20th c. Czechs as a nation. buff.ly/cJClfhV

Agreed, particularly the sounds that (my variety of) English doesn't have. Learning to reproduce them accurately makes such a difference to comprehensibility! Though a hint of an English accent isn't necessarily a bad thing – I've frequently been told it's sexy, especially in French!

Not entirely true; I would say "conjunctivitis"... but I freely admit to not being normal! Maybe English should try borrowing "torcicolo". It's a great word!

...though it probably isn't that sudden, of course; I've visited Germany twice this year now, but my last visit before this year was a while ago. In the Before Times, in fact! Must try and go back more often. I hadn't realised how much I missed it!

I mean, yes, I'm fascinated by the T-V distinction and how it works differently in different languages... & given Germanic enthusiasm for English, I'm grateful that I was able to speak German at all... but I'm surprised that German, of all my languages, should suddenly embrace informality like this

I had a great time in Germany, but it's made me realise just how formal my German still is. I greeted people with Guten Tag! – they said Hallo! back; I took my leave by saying Auf Wiedersehen, they said Tschüss. And practically nobody called me Sie – which I don't mind, but still found a bit odd...

And while we're on the subject: there's no ethical use of a product brought to market through unethical means. It doesn't matter whether the product is "AI" or chocolate or diamonds. Most generative "AI" was knowingly developed through massive theft from creatives; we have the emails admitting this.

The acid test for me is a simple one: Has my professional and/or creative life benefited in any material way from "AI," and very specifically generative "AI"? No, it hasn't. Has it been negatively impacted by the same? Yup, in a whole bunch of ways. My professional life is worse now for it.

Brief reminder for authors justifiably angry with the @societyofauthors.bsky.social capitulation, AI does not just steal all your work (and all of mine), but all your privacy too. Can we have some outrage about that too, please?

I'm going to elaborate on this in as calm and reasonable way as possible, but sincerely: fuck off
the society of authors' feedback form about why you're not renewing your membership. In the write-in box, I have written: "I was shocked and deeply disappointed to see the magazine issue and now charter statement on genAI, which both seem totally full of waffle and apologist compromises.

This is a technology being used to put authors and illustrators out of jobs, using stolen work, and depleting the capacity for critical thought in people who use it. I get that you’re trying to make industry bodies agree to the charter as a ‘small step’ in the right direction. But I fundamentally disagree with the idea of some ‘ethical’ use becoming possible - look at the companies running these things, the severity of its environmental and community harms, the exploitative processes used to build and maintain the databases and server banks required.

As a full-time author who's marginalised and severely disabled, I do also find the idea that genAI companies are somehow making my job more accessible - not looking to undermine and destroy it - insulting and patently absurd.

I thought the SoA was supposed to advocate for authors' rights, and pleading with industry bodies to use this tech, but nicely, feels like a massive concession, and not one I'm able to be at all associated with."

I see we're arguing about whether hedgehogs are an inspirational animal to put on Bank of England notes. I have nothing sensible to say, because there is nothing sensible to say on the topic, so please enjoy some mediaeval PARTY HEDGEHOGS instead.
Illustration showing two hedgehogs rolling around in recently fallen fruit, while a third hedgehog, with fruit stuck to its spines like a 1970s dinner-party centrepiece, is staggering unsteadily back to its burrow.Another illustration. The hedgehogs are very clearly raiding a vineyard and have a more than slightly stotious look on them.
