I finished reading Dr. John K. Ousterhout's A Philosophy of Software Design and wrote a short review of it. Overall, I found it to provide a good overview of design at a level appropriate for junior engineers. Still worth reading for seniors, too! blog.irrational.engineering/Book-Reviews...

System upgrades seem to take exactly as long as it takes for you to get nervous that it didn't work, plus one minute.

after days of grifters and con men at CES we stumbled upon the booth for VLC. they were all dressed as wizards and told us, "we have nothing to sell, we just decided to show up". i told them I'd been using their software to pirate media for 15 years and they said "keep doing that"

The AWS console's new Cloudscape UI is one of the worst UIs I have ever had the displeasure of using. So much money spent on engineering this crap and for what? It's a regression in every way (for the customer, not that AWS cares anymore). @quinnypig.com save me patron saint of AWS

it's kinda sad that digital work is so hidden like there's no messy study room or bookshelves full of works you've read or letters from people and gizmos and widgets you've built or stacks of drawings and diagrams it's all just, hidden in folders, already lost in space, and eventually lost to time

I started to look into the features of last night's AWS #reInvent announcement about the new AWS Security Incident Response, then I noticed the pricing. On to the next announcement.
"Tier 1: A minimum monthly fee of $7,000 for the first $0 to $125,000 monthly AWS spend

Tier 2: The sum of the previous tier plus 5.0% of the spend from the next $125,000 to 250,000

Tier 3: The sum of the previous tier plus 3.5% of the spend from the next $250,000 to $500,000

Tier 4: The sum of the previous tier plus 1.5% of the spend from the next $500,000 to $1,000,000

Tier 5: The sum of the previous tier plus 0.5% of the spend above $1,000,000"

There are two stages of a security career: Before you know the truth of what you read in the news on an incident, and after, when you know exactly what happened and can't say a single fucking thing.
