Wait. Marc Thiessen has never heard of batteries? And he's still employed by the Washington Post?

Thiessen has always been my go-to to demonstrate how right-wing media presence works in established papers. He has never done anything other than being a GOP shill, his columns are not only false but *boringly* false, with zero impact, and yet he had a permanent slot in one of the biggest papers.

This is a crucial flaw in “free speech culture” mindset, which tends to presume against all evidence that everyone is participating in good faith. It’s one thing to say the wolf should have a fair chance to eat me; it’s another to say I have an obligation to make the wolf feel comfortable about it.

In 2016 this guy went to a law office with the goal of killing his wife’s lawyer. He hacked a woman to death with a machete and bludgeoned two other people to death (including a man he falsely thought was that lawyer), then set fire to the building to cover his tracks. Anyway, Trump just freed him.

One way to think about it: Executive orders tell you very specifically what the executive branch thinks that the law is and how they will act like the law is.

Look I can put on my law professor hat and reconcile this with evolving case law and all that. But at some point you have to ask: is this a Court worth rehabilitating? They are failing to meet the moment. Just the opposite even: they are undermining the rule of law. (2/2)

I’ve gotten some negative feedback about the language I used about Columbia. Although I accept people choosing their own tone, I decline to accept tone critiques from people who wish to follow decorum obediently into a ditch. Columbia’s leadership is contemptible Vichy scum.

The Trump appointee dissent also takes pains not to declare that birthright citizenship necessarily applies as the plaintiffs and majority state. This creates the impression that there is a school of judges ready to agree with the Executive Order by limiting the landmark Wong Kim Ark case.

Look at this one astounding sentence in the NY Times. It says so much about their failure to rise to the current moment. 1. Todd Blanche is of course a Trump crony and fixer, but the Times can't say that. Let's just say he was Trump's personal lawyer.
"he will have to walk a careful line, balancing his current responsibility to pursue the public good by getting what he can out of Ms. Maxwell against his erstwhile responsibility to defend Mr. Trump against any possibly embarrassing information that she might eventually provide."

The State Department is confused - no one is being 'convicted' on the basis of the Digital Services Act, because it is not a criminal law Also, an outfit that detains and tries to expel people for criticism of the Israeli govt has zero moral high ground on free speech issues

As I stated at the time the Court's immunity decision came out, not only would it not prevent a future Trump from going after previous presidents, it gives him immunity if he orders his DOJ and intel officials to fabricate evidence to support his accusations! Which...is exactly what they are doing.

SCOTUS doesn’t have to come up with an excuse for allowing Obama or Biden to be prosecuted despite their ruling about Trump. They only have to refuse without explanation to intervene, and stay without explanation any lower federal court’s attempt to intervene.

Yup. As I’ve said before, the right’s constant sense of grievance even as they control every branch of government stems from the fact that the base doesn’t really want specific policy reforms. They’re angry about cultural trends the government can’t really do anything about in a free society.

Even assuming an LLM stumbled into a revolutionary scientific discovery, it would only be an untested hypothesis. A lack of hypotheses is not science's problem - it's $$ for the research to test those hypotheses that's sorely needed. And, that's being cut to fund LLMs.

How many times do we have to remind people: the chatbot *cannot* admit to *anything*. It *doesn't know*. When you ask it about itself, it generates its answer the same way it generates your request that it write an email. It takes what you tell it and responds in way to sound plausible.

Walz with the "weird" comments was doing the same thing - - rejecting the GOP framework as a whole, pointing out how bizarre it was, how crazy it was, rather than sanewash it. And it was hitting, and then the campaign clearly muzzled it for fear of alienating a class of voter that doesn't exist.

The Supreme Court should preserve the status quo until legal questions are resolved and explain the disposition of cases for the public. They are abdicating basic principles of equity and failing to fulfill their institutional role. They aren’t pretending to try. There isn’t even the veneer of law.
