Recently read - The Vegetarian by Han Kang I’ve started a new reading challenge to read books written by Nobel Prize winning authors, in a bid to broaden my horizons. I enjoyed this one - strange, thought-provoking and highly emotional.

Recently read - Tsubaki Stationery Store by Ito Ogawa A lovely examination of writing, the Japanese language and the power of a beautiful, handwritten letter. Shame they felt the need to put a cat on the cover of this new edition - there’s no cat in the story!

I’m at @cymerafestival.co.uk this weekend - I’ll be popping into a few panels but otherwise making the most of “bar con”! If you see me, don’t hesitate to say hi 👋🏻

Sometimes I get the Dictionary Word of the Day emails and think there is a reason these words are not widely known or used. I’m all for extensive vocabulary, especially when such words express very precise / unique emotions or circumstances. But I also recognise the value of plain English!

Recently read - The Remains of the Day by Kazuo Ishiguro Ishiguro is always challenging and thought-provoking, yet still easy to read and enjoy. Here he reflects on humanity in a very specific context that creates an extremely impactful narrative.

Recently read - Butter by Asako Yuzuki Visceral and deeply intriguing, although I have to admit I think very clever marketing and cover design contributed to its success more than the prose or plot.

Recently read - The Dream Hotel by Laila Lalami Thought provoking and unsettling, with tinges of dystopian. What makes this book impactful is that it’s easy to imagine this happening in reality.

It’s been a long time since I shared a ‘Recently Read’ mini review. Life has been busy - we’ve moved house, relocating slightly to a new area, and I haven’t had much headspace as a result. But I’ll be posting catch up reviews from now on, starting today…

Fab evening at @waterstones.bsky.social Greenwich with @sophiekeetchauthor.bsky.social talking about her new book! I loved Morgan is My Name, am halfway through Le Fay and can’t wait to see how the trilogy completes in Storm Over Camelot! And is it even a book talk without a book biscuit? 💚

Working through my edits to complete before I start querying in January. I wrote 800 words this morning, and finished another scene - good progress! The internal critic is very loud, telling me it’s terrible and everyone will hate it. But I’m trying my hardest to ignore that voice. #amwriting

Brilliant event last night - it was a joy to hear @misterkristoff.bsky.social speak about the Empire series. Shock of the night was that Aaron and Baptiste weren’t meant to be *a thing* 😱😭💔 Seriously though, these books traumatise and inspire me in equal measure. One of the best I’ve ever read.

Two days left on retreat in Devon and I’ve got four scenes left to write in my reworked Chapters 1-5. Finally getting to grips with this section of the manuscript felt so daunting. It’s very satisfying to make progress. Of course I left the hardest scenes til last…! #writingcommunity #author
