Recently read - Matrescence by Lucy Jones My reading has somewhat changed in light of recent life developments. This was a good start to a new chapter for my family - it pulls no punches, made me angry about the injustices mothers still face, but gave me hope too.

Enjoying a spicy maple hot chocolate now the nights are drawing in and autumn approaches. I love the change of seasons, and find things to appreciate in every one. Summer was hot, but sitting outside in the evening in my garden was bliss. Now I’ve got the blankets out, ready for cosy times!

Recently read - The Vegetarian by Han Kang I’ve started a new reading challenge to read books written by Nobel Prize winning authors, in a bid to broaden my horizons. I enjoyed this one - strange, thought-provoking and highly emotional.

Recently read - Tsubaki Stationery Store by Ito Ogawa A lovely examination of writing, the Japanese language and the power of a beautiful, handwritten letter. Shame they felt the need to put a cat on the cover of this new edition - there’s no cat in the story!

Sometimes I get the Dictionary Word of the Day emails and think there is a reason these words are not widely known or used. I’m all for extensive vocabulary, especially when such words express very precise / unique emotions or circumstances. But I also recognise the value of plain English!

Recently read - Butter by Asako Yuzuki Visceral and deeply intriguing, although I have to admit I think very clever marketing and cover design contributed to its success more than the prose or plot.

Recently read - The Dream Hotel by Laila Lalami Thought provoking and unsettling, with tinges of dystopian. What makes this book impactful is that it’s easy to imagine this happening in reality.

I’ve been making my way through quite a few Otome titles recently too - I’ve played a bit of 9 RIP, Radiant Tale: Fanfare, Collar x Malice Unlimited and Winter’s Wish. Currently I am playing Homura: The Crimson Warriors. I am really enjoying the historic setting, and the similarities to Hakuoki.

Recently read - Empire of the Dawn by Jay Kristoff It’s very difficult to explain how I feel about this book without spoiling the ending. All I can say is that I will miss Gabriel terribly - he is one of my favourite protagonists of all time and the end of his story had me hooked!

Working through my edits to complete before I start querying in January. I wrote 800 words this morning, and finished another scene - good progress! The internal critic is very loud, telling me it’s terrible and everyone will hate it. But I’m trying my hardest to ignore that voice. #amwriting

Recently read - Happiness by Aminatta Forma Dealing with themes of displacement and hostility to migration, this was a very timely read. Set in my local area so I particularly enjoyed how easily I could visualise the setting and landmarks mentioned!
