AI is a colonialist project, which is why many of its leaders are literally trying to colonize Earth & outer space. Hallmarks of colonialism: * getting rich via expropriation (theft as below) * exploitation (cf: participation in AI bros' simulated-rape galas as a condition of career advancement)

As someone in a STEM discipline, I really abhor the kind of messaging that Mark describes. The messengers aren’t people who actually care about STEM. It’s really a shorthand for “do something practical, focus on your relation to the labor market”.

Wild that we are ceding to this narrative: “In detailed public accountings of the incidents, the companies have characterized the hacks as inadvertent outgrowths of testing and evaluation, with OpenAI calling its model behavior “unexpected” and “unprecedented.””

About last week’s NIH & OMB meeting… Okkn what basis can the NYT claim that Bhattacharya has been trying to preserve work on health disparities?? I have NEVER heard him speak up in favor of studying the social and economic determinants of health at NIH. Not once. www.nytimes.com/2026/09/20/s...
One of Mr. Trump's executive orders, issued on his first day back in office, ended all administration programs involving "diversity, equity and
inclusion." It has had far-reaching effects on N.I.H. studies, including those investigating "health disparities" — why populations defined by factors like race or socioeconomic status may be prone to certain diseases or to suffer worse outcomes.
As a Stanford University economist, Dr.
Bhattacharya conducted research on health disparities and has been trying to find a way to preserve N.I.H. funding for such work. In 2011, for instance, he and colleagues reported on "persistent racial disparities in survival after heart transplantation."

David Quammen's essay in The New York Times today closes with this paragraph. It's both a scientific falsehood, and an incredibly dangerous narrative. If you're willing to give me five minutes of your time, I'd like to explain why.
The Ebola virus doesn’t need to spill back. It abides in its reservoir host, and awaits its next opportunity. A virus can’t climb out of a bat or a monkey and fly off in search of human prey. It can only spill over. If humans left the reservoir host alone — not hunting it, not capturing it, not eating it, not exporting it live, not disturbing its forest habitat — the virus wouldn’t re-emerge in humans. It would remain where it is, harming no one. But of course that’s not what happens. And when viruses spill, they often spill into us, because the human population is such a big, busy target.

I liked the part about interpretability, but I wanted at least a hint at how money/finance, ego, carelessness, beliefs about technology, etc, are creating barriers to a more reasoned and responsible use of AI models by humans. We aren't just passive experiences of tech change, humans are driving it.

To thread the needle on the nuance here: we detect an unequivocal, but not universal, anthropogenic fingerprint. Human activities are contributing to the emergence of different diseases in different ways, and important drivers have much narrower effects than are often claimed.

We live in this region, in a low-risk fire zone abutting a high-risk area. Securing home insurance was VERY stressful. We feel locked into our plan, which cost incs each year. This is a huge pressure point for new/potential home owners. I knew abt the FAIR Plan but not this 2ndary, surplus market.
