While we're having fun, may I present The Street Trust's endorsement of longstanding incumbent Chair of the Oregon House Transportation Committee, Susan McLain alongside wweek's recent non-endorsement of her from May 2026. www.thestreettrust.org/actionfund/c... www.wweek.com/news/2026/04...
From The Street Trust's endorsements page: At a time when things are already too expensive, we cannot afford to allow crumbling infrastructure to undermine Oregon's economy and impact our businesses, our free movement and travel throughout the state, our employment opportunities, or our ability to get our kids to school safely. SUSAN MCLAIN OREGON HOUSE D29Willamette Week endorsement write up from May 2026: As chair of the House Transportation Committee, McLain played a key role in fumbling the top priority of the 2025 legislative session: a funding bill for the Oregon Department of Transportation whose last-minute failure embarrassed Democrats. She failed to build enough support for her package, even as her party held commanding supermajorities in both chambers. (The compromise version is about to die via the ballot box.) She tells us she couldn’t have worked harder or talked to more people, which isn’t exactly reassuring. If this was the best she could do, we wonder if McLain is any longer capable of forging the connections needed to push meaningful policy through the Legislature.

Worse, McLain co-chairs the Joint Committee on the Interstate 5 Bridge—perhaps the only project going worse than the ODOT funding package. In less than four years, as the Oregon Journalism Project revealed, the estimated cost of the project has more than doubled, from $6 billion to $13.6 billion. The replacement bridge may never span the Columbia River, but McLain appears to be in denial. She says the project has been “successful” because “we’ve met every target and goal we’re supposed to.” She refuses to concede costs have ballooned, or admit that her fellow committee members were outraged at project officials for keeping the new numbers under wraps. Discussing the bridge with her is like watching The Office’s Michael Scott drive his car into a lake on the instructions of his GPS.

Why does this stretch of NE+SE 20/21st still suck for bikes in the year 2026? I was using this route yesterday and witnessed two separate instances where drivers honked at folks biking legally. Why do we tolerate the daily tension + hostility as an acceptable tradeoff for some free street parking?

The Plan™, brought to you by Allan Classen and Sharon Meieran*, as highlighted on SM's campaign marketing. #multco *just kidding, this plan was paid for by public tax dollars
We have tons of money. We literally couldn't spend it all. What we lack is a plan and a system that actually accounts for where our money is going." Allan Classen The Plan nwexaminer"Meieran is running for the county's top seat based on a conviction that—in a system in which the chair administers all city departments and controls the commission's agenda—it's the only way to bring about the necessary structural change. "My goal is to fix Multnomah County," she said, "and I need to be chair to do it." Of the three vying for the position, only Meieran has produced a plan."

Subsidizing Transportation Wallets is the answer! Great program currently running but geo limited to NW and CES, and the Access for All TW which is income limited. The CES/NW wallets are incredible. $100 gets you all of this, complete game changer IF you can access the program.

    $200 TriMet Hop card

Good to see TriMet mobilizing and educating riders about where the blame lies for these upcoming service cuts. “Funding TriMet should be a top funding priority for our region.”
From an email trimet sent riders today: Decision-makers are asking Oregonians to share how they think transportation dollars should be spent in the future. TriMet relies on state funding, and your feedback could help preserve our service for generations to come.

Now is the time to speak up. Tell them Oregon needs reliable public transit.

Take the survey

Here's some suggested copy for the blank survey portion:
Funding TriMet should be a top funding priority for our region. TriMet is essential infrastructure that connects people to jobs, school, health care, local businesses, community services and each other. For me, maintaining and investing in a strong public transit system is the #1 priority.

From PBOT's flyer: things that would be nice if you did them in your neighborhood, but zero requirement to actually do any of it. Meanwhile on Burnside they'll ticket and tow your ass for going to Mary's at 1am.
HELP US GET THE BEST CLEAN

Here are some things you can do to help us clean your street:

Move any vehicles parked on your side
of the street so our crews can do a good
thorough job.

Remove obstacles like basketball hoops
and garbage bins before your cleaning day.

Trim overhanging branches. Our machines
are up to 11-feet high. Low-hanging limbs
prevent them from hugging the edge of the
street and getting the best clean.

Schedule landscaping drop-offs like mulch,
soil, or gravel so you have time to clear it
from the street before your next cleaning.

Do NOT rake leaves or additional debris
into the street. This is not like fall Leaf Day
service. Our schedule and equipment cannot
handle the extra debris.

We did it, Portland.
This afternoon we’re submitting more than 62,000 signatures to the City of Portland in support of the Safer Portland initiative, which would place a minimum police funding requirement on the ballot. Only 42,000 signatures were needed to qualify.
Thank you to every volunteer, business owner, signature gatherer, donor, and Portlander who took the time to sign. Whether you gathered one signature or thousands, this effort succeeded because so many people chose to get involved.
Let’s go Portland!

Neighborhood associations don't match class theory social divisions and thus draw citizens away from radical leftist organizations. It's a debate worth having, but when radicals get real power inside government institutions, they tend to use their leverage rather than powers of persuasion.

Chart that breaks down the total Program Amount: $14.4 billion for a freaking bridge, as follows:

Escalation ($2.4 billion): Inflation that considers construction timelines.

Risk ($4.2 billion): Uncertainty that could change the Program’s cost or schedule.

Not sure, it's a study that is at final stage of the feasibility study and planning portion afaik. Not sure what's left todo beyond it being picked up and championed. A bit on where public funds could be gathered from 2024 report, page 38. www.oregonmetro.gov/sites/defaul...
This table outlines potential public funding options for the
Project. These funding mechanisms would require significant
political will to undertake. Due to the high economic impact
and community benefit of the proposed Project, however,
public investment is warranted and also needed given the
Project’s financial feasibility gap.
It is likely a combination of these financing tools will be needed
to successfully fund the Project. While operating profits for the
Project are projected to be significant and could be a potential
source of capital funding, it is crucial that not only upfront
capital required is funded, but also a long-term capital
improvement plan to maintain the Project as a state-of-the-art
facility in the region in the future.
It is assumed operating profits, including private naming rights
revenues, would fund these capital reserves, while additional
funding sources, such as those outlined in this table, would be
potential opportunities to fund the estimated capital costs of
the Project.
It is not expected that a private operator would take on the
construction / development risk of the Project. A private
operator could potentially offer to provide a limited up-front
capital investment of up to $3 million.
Net estimated bond proceeds from these potential revenue
streams are very preliminary based on conversative debt
assumptions including 2x debt service coverage and a 20-year
amortization. Having Metro’s full faith and credit backing would
keep bond interest rates low, and potentially improve upon the
term and coverage needed, which could in turn increase net
bond proceeds available to fund the project. (see PDF page 38, linked in post, with table of options)
