Here for a good time, not a long time. Portland policy + politics, (inter)national urban affairs. Blazers, beer + spirits, support the arts, abolish ice. [he/they]

Can't say I understand how that all pencils either, with all the schlepping of beer and kegs back and forth, promoting a California beer company in Beer City Portland, but I ain't complaining :)

A slightly different model of this concept is already here at the Everywhere Brewing location in SE Portland. A low-frills, distributor subsidized perma-popup tasting room for a California brewery that is in a warehouse neighborhood with little foot traffic.

RIP Function PDX. It was nice to try the latest hyped beer from other states here in Portland, though the business model was always a head-scratcher. I'm sure it's difficult to pencil a permanent popup business when you're paying Alberta St / NW 23rd commercial rents.

^^ This is what Portland Metro Chamber et al are scared of, actually taking care of people and facilitating lives of dignity for the poorest Portlanders on their own terms. Sustainably even, with a modicum of city support.

"At a recent gathering, they welcomed Mitch Green, an economist turned city councilor. He was flabbergasted by Dignity Village’s annual operating budget: $60,000, or about $1,000 per person. He said Portland’s city-run tiny home villages cost taxpayers approximately $40,000 per person annually."

"There was a plan to fireproof Mt. Hood National Forest.." Words still have meaning last I checked and no forest management plan would ever claim to fireproof a forest. And this plan was already decades late. But nah let's use this moment to sow acrimony and division. Sigh. #journalism #wildfire

Did the Grasshopper Fire Have to Be So Bad?
It’s nearly extinguished, and it was far from 2026’s biggest Oregon blaze, but the 94,000-acre Grasshopper Fire east of Mount Hood represents the biggest missed opportunity this fire season.

This kind of iteration is cool, I wish PBOT would be this willing to take more risks and then fix what the get wrong for other projects.

While we're having fun, may I present The Street Trust's endorsement of longstanding incumbent Chair of the Oregon House Transportation Committee, Susan McLain alongside wweek's recent non-endorsement of her from May 2026. www.thestreettrust.org/actionfund/c... www.wweek.com/news/2026/04...
From The Street Trust's endorsements page: At a time when things are already too expensive, we cannot afford to allow crumbling infrastructure to undermine Oregon's economy and impact our businesses, our free movement and travel throughout the state, our employment opportunities, or our ability to get our kids to school safely. SUSAN MCLAIN OREGON HOUSE D29Willamette Week endorsement write up from May 2026: As chair of the House Transportation Committee, McLain played a key role in fumbling the top priority of the 2025 legislative session: a funding bill for the Oregon Department of Transportation whose last-minute failure embarrassed Democrats. She failed to build enough support for her package, even as her party held commanding supermajorities in both chambers. (The compromise version is about to die via the ballot box.) She tells us she couldn’t have worked harder or talked to more people, which isn’t exactly reassuring. If this was the best she could do, we wonder if McLain is any longer capable of forging the connections needed to push meaningful policy through the Legislature.

Worse, McLain co-chairs the Joint Committee on the Interstate 5 Bridge—perhaps the only project going worse than the ODOT funding package. In less than four years, as the Oregon Journalism Project revealed, the estimated cost of the project has more than doubled, from $6 billion to $13.6 billion. The replacement bridge may never span the Columbia River, but McLain appears to be in denial. She says the project has been “successful” because “we’ve met every target and goal we’re supposed to.” She refuses to concede costs have ballooned, or admit that her fellow committee members were outraged at project officials for keeping the new numbers under wraps. Discussing the bridge with her is like watching The Office’s Michael Scott drive his car into a lake on the instructions of his GPS.

PBOT has acknowledged this issue, apparently a fix is in the works for next year. I generally still avoid biking on broadway with all of the zig zagging and conflict points, but I find the street as a whole is markedly chiller since that project.

D2 councilors and especially Dan Ryan wasted lots of money and time trying to drag heels and preserve this unoccupiable, stripped down, decrepit building when we should have fully focused on delivering the replacements years ago.

Think about how long it has been since you first saw headlines about Harvey Weinstein’s violence. Nine years after #MeToo went viral, his case(s) are still working their way through the criminal justice system. This is (one of a long list of reasons) why survivors don’t report.

We could always use a stronger bench. It's also indicative of how hard it is for older lifetime DC electeds to face moving on to a life not catered to by full time staff and the salary/benefits. Not to mention the seniority lost in the process. Same story with Wyden. (I respect them both, ftr)

Esther has maybe the best bet for filling in a third circle for a candidate with a progressive platform, but given limited political experience, virtually no endorsements, etc. it's not looking great.
160
bus enjoyer @intersections.bsky.social · 22/09/2026
We unfortunately lack a strong third progressive candidate with deep relationships and name recognition in D3, maybe I'm wrong and one will surge ahead but that outcome looks slimmer by the day. So do you want Novick, or do you want Kellie Torres?
150
bus enjoyer @intersections.bsky.social · 22/09/2026
Unpopular opinion, probably: I would personally love to see Novick hit the bricks and he should be held accountable for his inaction and betrayals, but I question the tactic of not ranking him in a multi-member district race where he could be unseated by someone to his right.
