Yeah, and a lot of those folks are absolutely convinced left wing populism is the cure to the far right.

Well really it was a few years after the bubble burst in the 90s but I still think its fair to say after, just not immediately.

It makes more sense when you understand that the LDP (big tent right wing party) has basically run Japan since 1955, except for 2 after their economic bubble burst in the 80s, and 3 right after the global financial crisis. It may be naturally right leaning.

Yeah you get excited thinking that there are Electric Daisy Carnival themed knives, and then realize it's just everyday carry.

I am now calling a moratorium on takes declaring: 1.) "quick prosecutions" solve fascism (Flavio's dad was prosecuted and barred from office for Brazil's J6 incident) 2.) left-wing populism solves fascism (Lula is the Bernie of Brazil)

It is sort of crazy how all these other countries are doing all these other things with all these other systems, and this still keeps happening. At the time I really did think Brazil did it right, as opposed to the US, by putting their traitor in prison, and yet here we are. Multi-party too.

I think the data suggests we are in for quite the period of thermostatic opinion causing significant political instability in most democracies. And probably some non democracies too.

It would cause the GOP psychic damage to lose Texas.

Fairs fair though, if I had been Bernie's chief campaign strategist in 2016, I'd blame Democrats for losing as well, I mean I certainly wouldn't blame myself now would I?

I don't have many predictions either, but I do think the usual suspects, will find a way to blame American liberals for this.

Their definition of 'undesirable' was pretty big. Needless to say, this was significantly worse than any sort of strawman I could have created about them. I'd say that turned out much different than how you describe the process. I lost respect for them, rather than learning to respect differences.

I know you got a lot of people mad at you, so I'm going to be constructive here. The last time I talked to someone I liked and respected on the other side of the aisle about their views, they tole me we needed to round up undesirables, put them on a "monkey island," and let them kill each other.

It's very confusing to me why people keep saying this, because we've all done this before, and the situation almost invariably makes us even more biased against these people.
110
Jo_clever_ke @insidejoke.bsky.social · 11h
My experience is the opposite. That doing this if anything made be even more biased against them. But also, there aren’t two sides to ideological bias, as this implies there are only two ideologies. This is clearly about Dems and Rs b it they’re too much the coward to say it.

There are some people who are probably personally better than their media persona. Megyn isn't one of them. The mask was when she was trying to be a "mainstream" personality.

It's a weird dichotomy with Trump, maybe even a paradox, he both loves and hates losers. He hates being forced to associate with losers in order to elevate them but loves elevating losers so as to be surrounded by sycophants entirely reliant on him.

Everyone knows about the Mad as Hell part, even those who never watched the film, but most people don't know about the part where Beale's politics such that they were (he was unhinged and crazy) completely flipped after listening to a short rant.

Im no expert on women, but I have to assume that when they hear another women talk about how their ex partner, the one who cheated on them, isn’t so bad, that they’ll nod along and agree, certainly wouldn’t argue against the point with barely concealed disgust. So good to raise the salience.

Imaging a coworker, on hearing you are hungry, offering to go to their desk and come back with a few bucks so you can get something from a vending machine, you’d be thankful. Now imagine them offering to get you $200, you either get confused, paranoid, or upset, assume that they’re mocking you

I do not think it would matter, it’s too much money. Especially when compared to actual stimulus payments in the recent past. It’s so much people instinctually feel it’s bullshit meant to mock them.

This is what I think of as a "Deal with the Devil" bias. People in a weak position want to believe they can make a deal with the devil on their own terms to get something they want, but in real life a devil will just take what it wants from the weaker party.

Over a daylight savings bill of all things. I don't know if Trump thinks it'll be a feather in his cap for the election, or if this is stemming from Trump's desperate fixation to leave a stamp on the world.

The issue with "monsters are marginalized people in fantasy clothes" is that it ends up with things like people making orcs more explicitly like people from IRL sub-Saharan Africa. "There's kind of a racist subtext with orcs, so we've fixed it by making them H. Rider Haggard Zulus." Which, um.

Once heard a guy explain how he watched television as a way to unwind.... but he phrased it in the context of it being a mechanism to perform a cognitive fine tuning. Weird shit. She talks like that guy.

Conservative whites have been losing a rearguard action against immigrant academic achievement for a century. Having ensured that any appearance of "racial preferences" is prohibited, they find themselves uncompetitive and now want to bring back "character" tests, once used to bar Jews.

I find this framing wrong footed, because Piker isn't really random, he actively engaged in outreach to multiple primary candidates and was electioneering on their behalf. Random would be them getting mad at some guy that does video games reviews and never touches poltics.
