If we're talking about ammonia emissions, not to forget that about 70% of total U.S. ammonia emissions come from animal agriculture. A big first step toward reducing those emissions would be to cut back on meat consumption.

Back of the envelope calculation: If we took just the acreage in the U.S. used for animal feed (~175 million), we could feed every American a healthy, sustainable plant-based diet. That includes crop rotation & cover crops.

Interesting that the clean water advocate quoted in the piece points primarily to inadequate sewage systems in Missouri when the state's core agriculture is poultry, cattle, and pigs. Whole lot of fecal pathogens in animal manure.

According to the Times, the Colo River Upper Basin will not have similar restrictions. And this is where the consumed volume of water going to cattle-feed crops is more than three times what is consumed for municipal, commercial, or industrial uses combined.

You're absolutely right. Here is some of the work we've done on soybeans in the U.S. But we calculate by value. By weight, ~77% of all soybean production goes to animal feed.

We analyze the share of corn production in the U.S. going to animal feed. It's growing every year. The USDA should reconsider its mission statement "we are feeding the world" to "we are feeding the world's livestock."

I wish more journalists would point out that in the U.S., About 40% of water consumption (from irrigation) is for animal agriculture. Mostly for corn, soybeans, and alfalfa that go to livestock and poultry.
