Sort of insane fact about how broken US urban planning is—America now spends more building *just the lights for roads and highways* than on all subways & ground mass transit combined Spending on roadway *pavement* is 18x transit spending

NEW Economist/YouGov Sep 25-28: The midterms Democrats' lead in the 2026 congressional race hits a new high: Likely voters back Democrats over Republicans 53% to 38%, a 16-point edge Among registered voters, the lead is 6 points yougov.com/en-us/articl...
A line chart of YouGov polling data with the headline: "Who is leading among registered voters and likely voters in the race for Congress in 2026."

The chart has the sub-headline: "In the elections for U.S. Congress in November, who will you vote for in the district where you live? (% of registered voters picking the Democratic candidate minus the % picking the Republican candidate)."

The chart has the note: "Note: Likely voters are U.S. adult citizens who meet two criteria: (1) They either are registered to vote or say they will be registered to vote by the November elections; and (2) They either say they will definitely vote in November or say they have already voted. The displayed question has been used since the August 14 - 17, 2026 survey. Prior surveys asked the question, "If the elections for U.S. Congress were being held today, who would you vote for in the district where you live?" Responses of "other," "not sure," "I would not vote," and "I will not vote" are not shown."

Maj. Gen. Horatio Wright, commanding at Cincinnati, and Davis’ nominal superior (and friend), obtained his release from custody, citing the emergency of the Confederate invasion of Kentucky and the need for proven officers in the field. In the end, Davis walked free and nothing more happened.

"Engineering is not essential to a republican government" is as daft as saying history is not. All the successful republics of history had concern for the built environment and for the material & technological bases of commerce, war, the infrastructure needed for republican social stability...

Heightened John Brown awareness is always a good thing, but the man was born in Connecticut, honed his abolitionism in Ohio, lived in Pennsylvania longer than anywhere, died in (West) Virginia and is buried in New York. More than just Kansas should claim him!

8 very interesting plots regarding AI sentiment
Infographic titled "What travels with positive AI sentiment? 1/2 Economic outlook and institutions" featuring four scatter plots analyzing national public sentiment on AI against economic and institutional indicators. Every plot shares a vertical y-axis measuring positive AI sentiment, defined as the percentage of people who agree that AI products and services have more benefits than drawbacks.
 * Prosperity (top-left): Compares AI sentiment against GDP per person PPP (logarithmic x-axis, n=32, r=-0.68). Shows a strong negative correlation, indicating that wealthier nations tend to have lower positive sentiment towards AI.
 * Expectations for the next generation (top-right): Compares AI sentiment against the percentage of people who believe children will be financially better off than their parents (n=28, r=+0.67). Shows a strong positive correlation, indicating that higher optimism for future generations aligns with higher positive AI sentiment.
 * Trust in institutions (bottom-left): Compares AI sentiment against the Edelman Trust Index scale of 0 to 100 (n=24, r=+0.73). Shows a strong positive correlation, indicating higher trust in institutions correlates with higher positive AI sentiment.
 * Concern about inequality (bottom-right): Compares AI sentiment against the percentage of people who view the rich-poor gap as a very big problem (n=28, r=+0.11). Shows virtually no correlation.
Infographic titled "What travels with positive AI sentiment? 2/2 Inequality and attitudes toward AI" featuring four scatter plots analyzing national public sentiment on AI against measures of inequality and self-reported perceptions of AI. Every plot shares a vertical y-axis measuring positive AI sentiment, defined as the percentage of respondents who agree that AI products and services have more benefits than drawbacks.
 * Measured inequality (top-left): Compares AI sentiment against national Gini index values ranging from 0 to 100, where higher indicates greater inequality (World Bank data 2019–2024, n=29). Shows scatter across varied Gini index levels without a single linear pooled trend line.
 * Self-reported AI understanding (top-right): Compares AI sentiment against the percentage of respondents who agree "I have a good understanding of AI" (Ipsos spring 2026, n=32, r=+0.67). Shows a strong positive correlation, indicating that higher self-reported AI understanding aligns with higher positive AI sentiment.
 * Expected job replacement (bottom-left): Compares AI sentiment against the percentage of respondents who believe AI is likely to replace their own job within 5 years (Ipsos spring 2026, n=32, r=+0.90). Shows a very strong positive correlation, where populations higher in expected job replacement also express higher positive AI sentiment.
 * Nervousness about AI (bottom-right): Compares AI sentiment against the percentage of respondents who agree "AI products and services make me nervous" (Ipsos spring 2026, n=32, r=-0.15). Shows a slight negative trend but overall weak correlation.

I think westerners tend to underestimate just how oppressive copyright is and how much worse it would be if it were possible to enforce globally. Enabling textbook and academic piracy is one of the more liberatory impacts of the internet. Money is too cheap for us to fully understand how vital it is

The idea that having a liberal arts degree makes someone more of a moral upstanding person is directly contradicted by the mass of evil people who have liberal arts degrees or associated professions/hobbies. Like there is less than nothing to support this argument.

Also reading what @lowrhoufo said as a call to whole sale abandon democracy is just willfully reading it in bad faith. The truth is the right is opposed to democracy in America rn and will use that to their advantage when possible. The left not being willing to counter that will lead to defeat.

Aerospace? @industryclear.bsky.social · 31/08/2026
Most of what you said here is meaningless if we do so little that the current American right is able to continue on its course. You can not claim to be protecting democracy while simultaneously allowing the mass disenfranchisement of American minorities.
200
Aerospace? @industryclear.bsky.social · 31/08/2026
I personally hold the opinion that anything close to a return to Jim Crow or 1940’s American voting rights should be considered unacceptable and contrary to democracy by anyone who actually believes in modern democracy. I don’t know what value democracy holds if we’re willing to bow that low.
020
Aerospace? @industryclear.bsky.social · 31/08/2026
Like if “democracy is that ground” and democracy simultaneously is inclusive of only white male landowners being fully enfranchised, that democracy quite literally holds no moral(in my opinion none at all) value in the modern day.
110
Aerospace? @industryclear.bsky.social · 31/08/2026
Sure, I don’t see how allowing the continuation of the republican project of mass disenfranchisement to even be close to holding that ground though?
110
Aerospace? @industryclear.bsky.social · 31/08/2026
Also it’s pretty clear that once the other side has itself moved beyond debate and decided to try destroying you, holding the moral high ground of debate and doing nothing else is a easy and quick way to lose outright.

Aerospace? @industryclear.bsky.social · 31/08/2026
Idk if he’s trying to say Carl Schmitt was correct on all points so much as that the modern right wing has fully accepted his ideas and are using them to effect currently whether correct or not.

Aerospace? @industryclear.bsky.social · 31/08/2026
Like based on what you are saying it’s fairly easy to read you as more committed to state retaining at all times the title of a democracy than the modern standards of universal rights and actual representative democracy. To me that’s seems counter productive and ultimately lacking any moral value.
020
Aerospace? @industryclear.bsky.social · 31/08/2026
Genuine question, why do you keep arguing that we must not use any “undemocratic” means to crush the currently openly and actively anti democratic right? While also arguing that democracy is in the modern day inclusive of forms of govt where a fraction of any given population is enfranchised?

if centrists didn't want to be put in a situation where the democrats have to reform the electoral system and judiciary within the first two years of the next president's term, perhaps they should have done it when it wasn't an emergency. if we do not do it, we will die under worse than Jim Crow.
