I am so delighted with the weather today. Saying this because I think it is important to give the weather positive reinforcement when it behaves well rather than just complaining when it is bad. So, thank you, weather. Mild and sunny, a temperature at which I do not wish to peel off my own skin. VG

An unforgettably perfect vignette from The Corner That Held Them by Sylvia Townsend Warner of two women keeping watch at an old man's deathbed.
2 women at a deathbed: "Sometimes a groan or a mumble from the man they watched would intervene in their conversation and they broke off and said a Hail Mary. Then their talk began again and they laughed from time to time, not because what they spoke of was particularly merry but because of the oddness of the world and the surprisingness of mankind.

Angel's character didn't make me think anything about writers or how they should be - just about the limits we all have in understanding people we don't like. Angel's portrayal surprised me because it was so harsh. Taylor is usually more nuanced.

Three of many stories that may be defining the new American era of isolation, ignorance, and cruelty:
1. The sudden withdrawal of $7 billion meant to support vulnerable American school children;
2. The raw glee of Trump and Rs who opened what amounts to a concentration camp.
3. Cutting off US support for the most effective child life saving programs ever developed. The Gavi program has been vaccinating millions of kids in the poorest nations.
Welcome to America the cruel

She seems to me, though I hesitate to say it because I have many autistic friends, but she did seem to be on the spectrum, though more pathological. Like Donald Trump.

Angel is someone to pity, not blame. Elizabeth Taylor made her grotesque and unbelievable, I think. More a caricature than a real person.

After a fitful night filled with dreams of ICE kidnappings and Israeli bombs, I read this passage in The Corner That Held Them: "It will not happen," he said. "I assure you it will not happen. The things which one dreads never come to pass."

Riddley Walker by Russell Hoban knocked me sideways. I'm still thinking about it 5 months later. Norah Webster and The Master, both by Colm Toibin. Exquisite writing and riveting stories.

I'm sorry but the largest protest of my lifetime is not the 7th or 8th biggest news story in the country behind "what does Gen Z want from Instagram?" This shit is humiliating. Rearrange your layout to meet this moment. Omitting the thing happening in every American city is malpractice.

I met Martin Sheen at a church in Malibu Beach where I was speaking about my work in India with disabled kids. At the gathering after, he bought me a donut, we chatted about West Wing and he gave me a check for $5000. That's my President.

A very funny and surprisingly moving episode. The book is hilarious, no doubt, but the thoughts and emotions it stirs are poignant and full of strange longings. I'm listening to the episode for the 2nd time, reading the book for the first. Both are so good and you do need both.

Here's a photo of him holding my mother (the one on his right) and her twin sister in 1924. (He died in 1936, so no, I didn't ever meet him! 😂)
Picture of G K Chesterton, a large elderly man with a mustache and glasses, holding twin girls, aged one. A birthday cake is on the table in front of them.

I went to the Tate Modern yesterday. In the Rothko room with all the Serious Art Connoisseurs there was a ~5 year old kid who walked up to each painting, pointed at it and shouted 'RECTANGLE' at each one in turn, then left the room.
