I am so delighted with the weather today. Saying this because I think it is important to give the weather positive reinforcement when it behaves well rather than just complaining when it is bad. So, thank you, weather. Mild and sunny, a temperature at which I do not wish to peel off my own skin. VG

An unforgettably perfect vignette from The Corner That Held Them by Sylvia Townsend Warner of two women keeping watch at an old man's deathbed.
2 women at a deathbed: "Sometimes a groan or a mumble from the man they watched would intervene in their conversation and they broke off and said a Hail Mary. Then their talk began again and they laughed from time to time, not because what they spoke of was particularly merry but because of the oddness of the world and the surprisingness of mankind.

Three of many stories that may be defining the new American era of isolation, ignorance, and cruelty:
1. The sudden withdrawal of $7 billion meant to support vulnerable American school children;
2. The raw glee of Trump and Rs who opened what amounts to a concentration camp.
3. Cutting off US support for the most effective child life saving programs ever developed. The Gavi program has been vaccinating millions of kids in the poorest nations.
Welcome to America the cruel

After a fitful night filled with dreams of ICE kidnappings and Israeli bombs, I read this passage in The Corner That Held Them: "It will not happen," he said. "I assure you it will not happen. The things which one dreads never come to pass."

I'm sorry but the largest protest of my lifetime is not the 7th or 8th biggest news story in the country behind "what does Gen Z want from Instagram?" This shit is humiliating. Rearrange your layout to meet this moment. Omitting the thing happening in every American city is malpractice.

A very funny and surprisingly moving episode. The book is hilarious, no doubt, but the thoughts and emotions it stirs are poignant and full of strange longings. I'm listening to the episode for the 2nd time, reading the book for the first. Both are so good and you do need both.

I went to the Tate Modern yesterday. In the Rothko room with all the Serious Art Connoisseurs there was a ~5 year old kid who walked up to each painting, pointed at it and shouted 'RECTANGLE' at each one in turn, then left the room.

I love that a friend who is sighted and doesn’t know braille, went to the trouble of creating a #braille message on their #Christmas card to me, using lentils, so that I could read it. And the braille is perfect! #blind #accessibility #card #dots #creative
The image shows a white card with raised orange dots arranged in lines, resembling Braille text. The card is open and placed on a carpeted floor. There are no visible printed letters or images, only the raised dots. The left side of the card has some embossed star shapes.

2025 will be a difficult year but we will get through it and then 2026 will come and that will be difficult too. Life will continue to open and open and open.
Poem by W S Merwin beside a photo of two open doorways in a building under construction:

This is a place where a door might be
here where I am standing
In the light outside all the walls

there would be a shadow here
all day long
and a door into it
where now there is me

and somebody would come and knock
on this air
long after I have gone
and there in front of me
a life would open

We are one of the few houses in Dehradun who decorate for Christmas - people ask if they can have their picture taken in front of our tree. Once 3 kids came on Christmas morning to see the tree. Ravi was at the table having breakfast and one of the kids said: “Auntie? Father Christmas lives HERE?”
