Publishers and Editors! I'm taking subs for Vol. 3 of the award-nominated "Best Weird Fiction of the Year" til end of the year. Writers! You'll get a chance to submit your 2026 stories in January. bestspecfic(at)gmail.com

Esteemed Editors and Publishers,

I am now taking submissions of original 2026 short fiction projects — magazines, anthologies, single-author collections — for consideration in The Best Weird Fiction of the Year, Vol. 3. (Publishing Sept. 2027). Vol. 1 is a World fantasy Award Finalist.

I am seeking material first published this year, in 2026. To be clear, only weird fiction FIRST published in 2026 is eligible for inclusion in this volume. I will accept translated work as long as the first English-language publication was 2026.

Stories should be between 500 and 17,499 words. Audio only stories are also ineligible, unless they also appeared as text.

Publishers and editors are encouraged to send electronic or digital copies, via the email address below. (I am not accepting hard copy submissions.) ePubs are preferred, but I will also accept text files (Word), Mobi, or PDF. Please do not cherry-pick selections. Send the entire book, journal, or magazine to:

bestspecfic@gmail.com

Thank you for your time and kind consideration.

Warm Wishes,

Michael

AI advocates say we have no right to stop innovation in the free market. Hogwash. We don’t allow corporations to come up with new nuclear weapons or varieties of cocaine or biological pathogens. We protect the public from certain kinds of innovation. We need guardrails on AI before it’s too late.

Many writers don't want their work labeled, in classic "don't put me in a box" fashion. Obviously critics and scholars and readers will discuss categories and labels, and that's great, but thinking too much about it all while writing fiction can cause some writers to freeze up.

While we're away, grab this eBook! Aickman's Heirs at just $3. One of our most lauded and acclaimed titles, and required reading for weird fiction aficionados. What a ToC! @strantzas.bsky.social won a Shirley Jackson Award for his efforts. undertowpublications.com/ebooks/aickm...
There has been a lot of theorizing about Weird Fiction, of late. It is, naturally, a large part of our remit. We are biased, certainly, but one of the canonical works of Weird Fiction we think you should read is Aickman's Heirs. Aickman, himself, preferred the term 'strange tales.'

We published Aickman's Heirs way back in 2015. Edited by Simon Strantzas, it is one of our most lauded titles. It won the Shirley Jackson Award, and was a finalist for the World Fantasy Award, and the British Fantasy Award. Further, the following stories were reprinted in various 'Year's Best' anthologies, won or were nominated for awards:

'The Dying Season,' by Lynda E. Rucker, Winner of the Shirley Jackson Award.

'Seven Minutes in Heaven,' by Nadia Bulkin, Finalist for the Shirley Jackson Award.

'Underground Economy,' by John Langan, reprinted in the Best Horror of the Year.

'Underground Economy,' by John Langan, reprinted in the Best New Horror.

'The Lake,' by Daniel Mills, reprinted in Best New Horror.

'Seaside Town,' by Brian Evenson, reprinted in Year's Best Weird Fiction.

'Seven Minutes in Heaven,' by Nadia Bulkin, reprinted in Year's Best Dark Fantasy & Horror.

'Camp,' by David Nickle, reprinted in Wilde Stories: The Year's Best Gay Speculative Fiction.

Just look at this stacked Table of Contents:

If you haven't read it yet, it is well worth your time. So we've put the eBook on sale for just $3. We know it'll be $3 very well spent.

NOTE - When purchasing eBooks you'll get an eMail with a link to download your files. The link is only active for 24 hours. I can resend the link if you do not download the files, to be sure, but there may be a delay when I'm away.
