Alright everybody, time to text the teachers in your life. The fall semester is open at SkypeAScientist and we are ready to match classrooms, scout troops, library groups, and more with scientists! Tell the educators in your life, and send them to SkypeAScientist.com
A frog uses its comically long tongue to catch a fleeing fly and the words say “send this to a teacher” pointing right. Then under the tongue it says “Skype a scientist matches classrooms with scientists for free Q&As” and there’s a little pond scene with lily pads and spatterdock flowers and a rock with a snail on it and a salamander with the words get a match at Skype scientist.com

I don't have a bucket list per say but the only thing that I've wanted to do since I was little is go storm chasing, particularly tornadoes or hurricanes. I'm absolutely terrified but I want to do it so bad so I'm putting this out in the universe and maybe the stars will align 🙂‍↕️ #stormchaser

Happy International Bee Day! In the Rethinking Lawns lab @negauneeinstitute.bsky.social Chicago Botanic Garden, we're working to help turn our lawns into better spaces for native pollinators. To celebrate, have some id keys for Midwestern/NE American bumblebees! drive.google.com/drive/folder...
Common Bumblebees of Eastern North America
From guides by Joel Neylon, Sheila Colla, Leif Richardson, and Paul Williams

Bombus impatiens
Key ID features -
Big blurry dot in the center of their back, made of a mix of black and yellow hair. Tends to have pale wings except for queens, which tend to have dark wings. Sometimes has some yellow hair on their head.

Bombus bimaculatus
Classic mark is two yellow spots on their abdomen, almost like two little yellow buttcheeks. Wings tend to be dark, almost always have a yellow patch on their head, and has a clear black dot between their wings. Additionally, their hair tends to be longer and messier

Bombus griseocollis
The classic mark is a stripe of brown hair on their abdomen. The dot on their back is small and neat, and their overall hair is neat and buzz-cut precise. Head only rarely has any yellow hairCommon bumblebees of Eastern North America, from "Bumblebees of North America" (2014) and Joel Neylon's guides

Bombus fervidus - Golden northern bumblebee
Dark wings, a narrow black band between the wing bases, female bees tend to have black heads, males usually have yellow. Mostly a golden bee

Bombus auricomus - Black and gold bumblebee
Dark wings, a black "backpack", and generally a mix of black and yellow stripes. Note that they pretty much always had yellow on their heads. T1 generally has yellow hair on the outer edges

Bombus pensylvanicus - American bumblebee
Dark wings, a black backpack, and a combination of black and yellow stripes similar to B auricomus. T1 tends to have yellow hair only in the center.Common bumblebees of Eastern North America, from "Bumblebees of North America" (2014)

Bombus affinis - Rusty-patched bumblebee
Wings have brown veins, female/queen heads tend to be black, but males can have some yellow mixed in. The classic B affinis back/scutum mark is a "thumbtack" "backpack", but Queens can have just dots. Generally speaking, most B affinis workers and males have rusty patches, but Queens do not! Their hair is medium and even

Bombus rufocinctus - Red Belted Bumblebee

WARNING - this bee has a lot of color variation! But generally speaking, there will be yellow on T2, either all yellow, or a yellow crescent in the center.

The classic look is T1-t3 are yellow, then t4/5 are reddish, but there are many different mixes of red, yellow, and black abdomens that appear. Most of B rufocinctus has yellow eyebrows or a little bit of yellow hair on their heads, but males especially tend to have yellowish heads. Wings have brown veins, their back is a black band, though males have yellow hair mixed throughout. Hair is short and even

Bombus terricola - Yellow-banded bumblebee

Wings are dark brown, back is very variable, but tends to have a yellow collar and a black center band. Female/queen heads tend to be black, while males can have a mix of yellow and black. Hair is short and tidy
